View Full Version : Would Chris Sutton Have Been A Good Signing For Us?

I say yes.
He destroyed Portsmouth with his link-play on the weekend.
He would have been the best short-term replacement for Mido as they are basically the same type of player.
What do you lot think?

I lost track of him when he moved up north, but I'd hesitate to make a judgement on him after two matches (same, sorry to say, with Rasiak)

I thought a striker should score goals? That was the Kanoute argument and he was superb at link up play.

Pompey away from home are awful. Let me know when he plays great against a top 10 side, or a side like Villa that puts 10 men behind the ball and has a good keeper.
He's also on a massive wage packet apparently, 50 grand or something.
Have faith, hopefully the club can still deliver a better forward

...the problem I had against Kanoute was that HE was the most gifted player Spurs had. But he couldn't be bothered.
That is why I said that he should have gone. Obviously the club agreed.

Sutton would have been better than Rasiak, for sure. But he would have come with several problems. First, as someone already mentioned are his wages. He would have asked for top dollar and only increased the incentive for other players to start demanding the same. Second, he would not have settled for being Mido's back-up. And I would much rather keep playing Mido than a 30-year old. Quite frankly, if Mido stays consistent he can be in our squad for the next 10 years. Sutton has what? Another 2-3 years left at the top? All in all, he's not worth the bother, as it is not even guaranteed that he will hack it after playing in the SPL for so long. I've still got my fingers crossed for Kuyt this summer.

I did say as a short-term arrival.

That wouldn't have changed his wages (and therefore our ability to bring in other players earning top dollar) or his unhappiness to play second fiddle to Mido when he gets back...
We're probably better off without him, but I agree that a Sutton-style player is what we should be looking for.

I say no.
Short term maybe, but generally no.

I believe that he would have been great for us until the end of the season. Even at £30K per week.

I've only rated him when he was at Blackburn.
Since then he hasn't really been a prolific scorer. He may look good in Scotland but it's a ************ league anyhow!

I am talking about his ability in holding up the ball and laying it on. He's great at doing that.

I'm not sure how long his contract is, if it is to the end of the season would have been a good short term signing. Although most players want longer deals than that, Sheringham wants 18 months for example.

He's on a loan deal at Birmingham only till the end of the season. He would have been a good addition till the end of the campaign, even at £35K per week.

I agree with that. You probably are a better footballer than Rasiak.
Welcome back Dave.
