No way were Kevin Campbell and Duncan Ferguson ever on £60,000 a week.

There are lot of suspiciously high numbers there. Viduka and Keane's figures look way too high, and I'm pretty sure Anelka was on £35,000 a week.

Football players earn less because clubs pay millions and millions for players.

No way were Kevin Campbell and Duncan Ferguson ever on £60,000 a week. Kevin Campbell and Dunc were both on £55,000 per week, not including performance bonuses. We sold Campbell in the summer and Dunc took a pay cut to stay on another year.

I don't think so, but maybe you're right. I can't remember now where I saw that number.

But you haven't added the transfer fee which was about $4million so that offsets the ammount that clubs can offer players.

True. But transfer fee isn't a form of compensation for the player, so it isn't a part of the player salary.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I thought that the player got a percentage of the transfer fee (10%?). Or is that something that gets negotiated?

players get a signing on fee, but that's unusually completely unrelated to the transfer fee. Occasionally a player might have a clause in his contract saying he'd get a % of any fee, but it's the selling club who pay him that.

They player usually gets a percentage if he says he dosent want to leave, bit like a golden goodbye.

60k for Keane is too much. The 40s sounds more like it.

I guess that answers the question about why they're always saying that their happy at the club.

concerning the wages of top soccer players vs top American sports players, I believe it has everything to do with number of clubs per fan. With the NFL, you have only approximately 24 teams to satify the appetite of the entire country/plant. IF Europe/the World were to focus all of their soccer money into just 24 professional teams instead of the hundreds out there, the salaries would be through the roof.

I think it's more to do with football being more of a team game. If you look at the differences between players wages on the same team you see that each member is valued whereas in the squad sports of the USA there are one or two very highly paid superstars and the rest are journeymen.

what do you expect from a league that has a $1.8 million salary cap and has lost $250 million over the 10 years in operations?

Oh, Garcia and Palencia should be in that list with around $1 million contract for Chivas USA.

It all because of the team ability to pay. A fortune 500 company would pay a lot more for an executive than a company that can't crack the Fortune 1000.

Man U and Chelsea has more revenues than Yankees/RedSox but they also has a $40 million tranfer fees expense bill each year that the Yankees/redSox do not have.

Can the Yankees/RedSox afford the $26 million per year for Arod, $22 mil for Ramirez IF their profit suddenly take a hit of $40 million a year due to their tranfer fee expense growing from $0 to $40 million?

Madrid overtook the Red Devils for the first time at the top of the "Football Money League," an independent report released by accountancy firm Deloitte on Thursday

Real Madrid increased its revenue by 17 percent to €275.7 million (US$328 million) for the 2004-05 season despite going a second straight year without a major trophy. United earned €246.4 million (US$293 million) in the same period.

AC Milan was third with €234 million (US$279 million), followed by Italian champion Juventus with €229.4 million (US$273 million) and English champion Chelsea with €220.8 million (US$263 million).

Real: 328 mil
Man U: 293 mil
AC Milan: 279 mil
Juventus: 273 mil (will increase by around 30-40 million thanks to a $120 mil a year TV deal starting in 2007)
Chelsea: 263 mil
