I almost decided not to post this since there is so much hate for Atlanta out there on this board..but since it does mention something about top flight and Atlanta I am posting it.
I hope (but I'm sure that won't happen) that everyone just takes this as it is, which is a long term target for a soccer club and leaves it at that. But I'm sure that this will get turned into another Atlanta bashing thread and you will waste a lot of peoples time with the same old rant (and I'm not saying it's not true, just that it has been said so many time before).
On a side note, you should really look at what the Silverbacks have done as an organization, it is more than most (all) MLS teams have done for getting into the community. Of course, some can argue that this helps keep people away from the Silverbacks ("The Silverbacks are trying to steal my youth team players, why should we go support them?") as sometimes youth soccer can be so petty.

I live in the Atlanta 'burbs, so I certainly won't be a hater, but it sometimes seems that the pro teams are an afterthought, the way they're trying to grow the "club." Nothing wrong with that, but a good bit of the $$$ they are spending to become a youth soccer monopoly could have been used to promote the team. Sure, they play on the other side of town from most of the soccer community (the new location is somewhat better), and in a crappy stadium to boot (up until last year, that is; now they play in a practically non-existent stadium :D (I'm sure it'll probably be ready in time--first home game isn't until June)), but there are a lot of soccer people who still don't know the team exists, or else just don't care. The 'Backs have less of a presence here than the Gwinnett Gladiators (ECHL hockey, for those who don't know)! True, the youth and amateur club is going strong, but it ain't puttin' butts in the seats. This is something that has stuck in my craw since the Ruckus days. I wish 'em well, but they have a long way to go.
On the positive side, they are the longest-lasting pro soccer franchise this town has had; beginning with the old USISL Magic, through the Ruckus, to the Silverbacks, they've been around for about 15 years (it's all the same team--Imerman picked it up from Chase (not sure/can't remember exactly what happened, and won't speculate), Lu got it from the A-League via Imerman (returned team to league mid-season 1996), and Latham/Glustrom/Jerkunica/Pratten got it from the A-League via Lu (league pulled rights mid-season 1998))!

Why thank you for putting me in my place. I didn't realize that articles posted 2 days prior were such old news.
You could have just chosen not to say anything since your addition to this thread is less than mine and you feel that my addition was worthless (not that I would expect different from a signicant group of bigsoccer posters).
But I will give you credit, at least you didn't start bashing Atlanta.
Enjoy your MLS team (right..) but until then you have given me an great reason to root against the Rhinos in the USL.
But then again, maybe I shouldn't even post this since I'm hijacking my own thread...ah well. Time to hit submit and then I guess I'll crawl away.;)

Atlanta sucks, it's the worst sports town in the country.
There, you obviously have so much emotional investment in this thread that it would be a shame to have you go away without at least some prophetic vindication.

I was surpirsed to see somehwere that they are planning on building a large stadium (15-20k). I had originally thought they would just have the mini stadium and a "full-sized" one which would be similar to the Batter's place.

dumb ass yankees! "oh the south sucks haha"! wait till we get our team than we will fvking break you!
it's kind of weird that every player from Georgia has been a fixture of the MNT. sounds to me that is just a little bit of fear. Georgia(and the south for that matter) is new at soccer but watch out we will dominate soccer like we do every other sport.

Man oh man. First off, the Hawks have been a disaster since Babcock. He ********ed up that team so bad that they're still trying to recover.
Thrashers suck? Look at the NHL standings and watch Kovalchuk.

atlanta braves.
and the reason why college sports are big in Georgia is because our players are actually from Georgia(or from a southern state). that's the problem with pro sports in this country the players have no choice for who they want to play for and they are traded like slaves.
i can't believe you actually said the atlanta thrashers. you do know for the past week it has been in the high 60s here? yeah, perfect place to put an ice hockey team.

Thrashers have good crowds- they're averaging over 15,000 and they sold out last weekend's game vs. Tampa. The atmosphere at the games is really strong; there is no comparison to the Hawks crowds-it's comparing Apples and Oranges.

Just because a town isn't a good basketball or hockey town, doesn't mean it can't be a good soccer town.
I lived in Norcross for a while, and I personally think a soccer team could be quite successful if done properly.
