i'm not telling to give up on him, i'm just telling to give gambino a few chances
I really don't kow how both are doing in practise right now, but from what I have seen, I would give Gambino the chance to play against Wolfsburg. Still it is a delicate topic as that could mean that Buckley will mentally collapse. No easy choice.

Agreed with footyfan regarding Buckley. Also the money spent on Delron forces van Marwihjk's hand a bit as well. Management (and this goes for any team in any league) does not like to admit it's mistakes and as long as he is not an overwhelming liability, he will be played. Plus, Gambino needs to be brought along instead of thrown into the fire straight away. I think what we will see, however, is a shorter leash on Delron from now on(hopefully). We all know Gambino's potential and capabilities. It's always been a consistency issue that has kept him as 2nd choice this year. So now with a great showing in Turkey, Gambino can't be kept down for long.

bvb09.de guesses that Gambino starts. 64.000 is the expected attendance.

It's a hard choice. But did you know that Gambino has ONLY scored in that Galatasaray match?
You want to put him ahead of Buckley based on one match. I'm translating an article now for the site that pretty much says that while Gambino has looked better in the practice matches, Buckley is the one shining in training.
I say give Buckley the starts. If he doesn't get into gear, give Gambino his shot.
We have more invested in Buckley and it is better for us if we can get him going. He's the proven Bundesliga performer, not Gambino.
But, I wouldn't blame BvM for starting Gambino either.
Can we have some of this discussion on the list now??

We only spent 425,000 on Buckley. It's not the money. It's that Buckley has done it at the Bundesliga level before and while Gambino has a world of potential, he's never actually proven anything at the Bundesliga level.
I wouldn't blame BvM for starting Gambino if he feels Gambino gives the team a spark.
However, my personal preference is Buckley. If we can get Buckley on the scoresheet, I think he'll be the player we were expecting to get.

Gambino was huge for us in that Bayern game 2 seasons ago. He looked like the next big thing. Then the injuries got him and he seems to be back to his old self now. Its not like he has never proven anything. I mean playing fantastic against Bayern has to mean something... right? Buckley has looked absolutely horrid in the matches I have seen. I haven't seen the last 3 where some say he had improved a bit. To me he looked like he did not know what to do on the field. He couldnt make any runs that would allow him to get some free space.

Sorry to tell you this, but Gambino never had any "big game" against Bayern. I think you mean the match he had against Leverkusen when he scored two goals.
Do you know how many guys had one great match and then never amounted to anything? The books are full of them.
I'm not saying Gambino will never amount to anything, but I am trying to show that you don't just grant someone "star status" or say they have great potential because they had one good league match.
And he didn't start having injuries right after that. He got his chances and he didn't do any freakin' thing with it.
Gambino had a total of 20 appearances for BVB in 2003-2004. Including that two-goal game against Leverkusen, he scored a grand total of THREE goals along with two assists.
In seven of those appearances, he played the full 90 minutes. In another seven of those appearances, he played between 79 and 90 minutes. In another three of those appearances he played 55 minutes or more.
He scored the two goals against Leverkusen at home in week 13 of the season. He didn't score again until week 27 at home against lowly VfL Bochum.
He made ten more appearances last season and didn't score anything. Got a yellow card though.
I just don't believe Salvatore Gambino is this "budding star" some of you make him out to be. I do agree that he deserves a chance, but I don't believe you ice out a proven Bundesliga player/scorer like Delron Buckley to do so.
According to Borussia Dortmund.com (www.borussia-dortmund.com), Buckley has been the one showing the most promise in training.
"Arlo" brought up Gambino's three goals against Galatasaray. What he didn't mention is that Gambino hasn't scored again since.
Is Delron Buckley a big-time Bundesliga scorer? No, not by any means. But last season, in 29 appearances, Delron Buckley scored five times the amount of goals Gambino has scored in his 33 Bundesliga appearances.
This doesn't make Buckley some kind of star, but it does give me more faith in him than in Salvatore Gambino.
I will readily admit that before last season, Buckley's highest Bundesliga goal-scoring total was five for Bochum in 98-99.
The thing is, Buckley DOES have last season on his side. He at least has another season with five goals. Gambino hasn't come close to that and he's had chances.
Honestly, I wouldn't blame BvM for playing either one. But he does have to make a choice and I feel the player with the most potential to score goals in the Bundesliga consistently is Buckley. I can't say that I'm right because I don't know. We will have to try both men for a little while.
Now, I will sit here and hope that either Buckley backs up my faith in him or Gambino proves me wrong about him.
And you can bet I will not have much patience with Delron Buckley. He was showing signs of getting off the schneid near the end of the first half of the season. I saw the matches and he played well. He was just missing that final bit of "oomph" to put the ball in the net.
I've only had this much patience with Buckley because I know he's spent much of his life in the Ruhrgebiet area and has to be feeling pressure now that he's playing for THE CLUB in that football-crazed area. That's understandable. But if Buckley doesn't get over that pressure quickly, then yes, I'll be calling for his ass to get glued to the bench and not move again unless someone gets injured.
Even if that happens, I'd want Buckley around for at least the beginning of next season to help Pienaar get adjusted to Dortmund.......
Besides, in a few weeks this discussion won't mean anything. If Amoah is what BvM thinks he is, Buckley and Gambino will be next to each other on the bench anyhow!! LOL!! :D

I will read your entire response tomorrow... but the Bayern game I was reffering to was on 17-04-2004. I just remember him being very dangerous. He set us up a PK that Ewerthon scored. Some will say he dived but he did what was needed of him. He didnt score in the game, but just had a overall quality appearance.
More to come tomorrow... gotta sleep now.

Gotcha. My apologies. I guess we just have different standards for what we call a "big game". :)

Maybe Rosicky more centre to half-right, and Sahin on the left. Looks not too bad imho.

Agree. I think it's pretty good with Buckley or Gambino. Especially with BvM saying he thinks Degen is finally starting to understand what BvM expects of him........

D'Alessandro won't play! :D

2-1 Dortmund half time..
Dortmund having much of the possesion but creating little chances.
Metzelder had to go off thanks to a nasty elbow, he couldn't stop his nose from bleading.
