Thank god!

We've got Jeff Carroll too!

He was the best d-mid at the combine. He also (I take it) can play right back.

He may be an absolute steal. Here's hoping ...

Agreed. I think he's a steal. With him going this late, I imagine he'll sign a development contract.

If he's got the same work ethic as BC, it's golden....

At least he'll have a place to stay on the cheap. I wasn't sure we would pick him, but when we didn't take him the round before I knew is available DCU would take him. He fills the local-guy quota we always seem to have for the draft.

The question is whether Brian makes him pay rent for the use of that spare bedroom. ;)

Ummm, Brian just got married, remember? I'm gonna go out on a limb here and say he's not that interested in having his brother live with him right now!:D

According to the Carrolls father Mike, Jeff's skills on the ball are amazing. This looks like a good choice. Plus his big brother can oversee his rookie hazing.

"Jeff is a great pick for DCU. I love his workrate when he does the dishes, and he has great speed when he goes outside to pick up the mail on a cold day."

I love this pick! I noticed from the combine reports that he could play on the backline and even got a shot at leftback in a 3-5-2. The fact that he can play in midfield and defense makes him a great pickup. I just can't believe he fell all the way to the 4th round.

Family's from Springfield.

Looks like he's moving back in with the 'rents unless he wants to work at a sporting goods store by day.

There is at least one more to come that is currently playing at West Virginia University, Pat Carroll. Pat is 6'0 150lbs and plays F. He was garnered as WVU's best soccer recruit ever in the programs history. He was a sophomore this past season and my guess is that he may leave WVU early for MLS....

I saw this kid play his Jr and Sr year at West Springfield HS (my brother tried out for this team). I don't recall *exactly* what the outcome was this year (soccermom i think your memory is a little better than mine ;)) but West Springfield was in the race for State championships almost every year and I believe at the time they were nationally ranked.

Anyway, Jeff played as a #10. A true #10. As in "the engine the makes the team go". He was hands-down the best #10 I've ever seen at that age. I have only ever said "wow" maybe a handful of times out of all the kids I've seen play (playing and coaching, rec/pickup/HS/college/NCSL/ODP), and he counted as one of them. He not only had sick ball skills, but great, and I mean great, vision and awareness. He was the link between defense and offense, coming back as far as the defenders to carry the ball upfield or spray passes all over the field. He can provide that killer pass in the final thrid, start a fast break from deep in his zone. Worked great with the ball under pressure. The only thing i will say I didn't see was how he would react to getting whacked consistently, like if somebody tried to take him out of his game by roughing him up.

Anyway, so I hear a little while later that he ended up going to St. John... playing DEFENSE. I was shocked to say the least. I did not see him play during his time there.

So what do I think he will bring to DC United? I think he will end up taking Benny's spot or one of the outside D. Here's why: DM is locked up with his brother Brian and Simms is right behind him. Gomito is our AM with Freddy backing him up.

Who backs up Benny? Whenver Simms took Benny's spot we ended up playing with 1AM/2 DMs instead of 1AM/1HM/1DM the way (i think) PN likes it. Dema was the next logical choice in that role (helping transition from D to O), but he was hurt early in the year and playing the wing late in the year. Freddy got a run or two out there (remember the Gomez/Adu/Carroll experiment?) but it was too much offense, not enough defense. Namoff got a few minutes there late in the season, but again it looks more like 1AM/2DMs. I don't think anyone else got a run there, but correct me if I'm wrong.

So Jeff Carroll fills that void very nicely. I'm going to go out on a limb and say that he still remembers how to run an offense and PASS the ball well. I will also go out on a limb and say that he learned some valuable defensive skills while playing Central D at St. Johns. A blend of offense and defense, which is *exactly* what Benny provides for us right now. I'm not saying Jeff will step in right away, but he can learn from Benny and be ready to step in whenever Benny's not available (Nats, tired, injury, etc).

Now this is pure speculation on my part, but to me we have a gaping hole at left back. Namoff, erpen, bos all have good ball skills and ar good defenders. Prideaux is a good defender, but his offense is well... offensive. Wilson (who I like) maybe goes forward a bit more than he should. jeff could also provide cover here for the same reason I said he could play HM. I don't know if he can play on the left, but namoff could definitely slide over.

EXCELLENT! We'll have a numerical advantage in the Coppa Kovalenko!
