Group winners in the CFU qualifiers will go ahead to the Gold Cup. Both group 2nd place finishers will join Honduras in the playoff for the 2 other spots.

So basically one more CFU Team will go, but will there be four Caribbean Teams or four UNCAF Teams go.

Articles in Monday’s major Sao Paulo newspapers indicate that Brazil plans to send its U-23 team to the Gold Cup.

But the real news is that they also imply that Robinho and Diego, both of Santos, may be on that team. If so - and if you haven’t already seen Robinho - do whatever you need to do to watch these games. ;)

The articles are both about the two players being left out of the U-20 team for the WYC so that they can remain available for Santos in the Libertadores. The schedule’s been known to change, but the Libertadores is currently set to end on July 2, well before the GC.

The Folha da Tarde article quotes Zagallo: “The two players [Robinho and Diego] are really a level above the others, and both may perfectly well be in the U-23 group that will compete in the Gold Cup.”

To me this just cheapens the Gold Cup tournament even more. What is the U23 side from a non-region team doing competing for the Concacaf regional championship (which allegedly the Gold Cup is about).

I would think Honduras would beat who ever finishes second from the Caribbean group but I also thought they would beat El Salvador and Guatemala and would give Costa Rica a hard time.

And, IIRC, Brazil sent their U-23s to one of those.

I understand that whether it's been done before - or how often it's been done before - has nothing to do with whether it ought to be done now, but it's apparently become the custom. The Copa America now has regular Concacaf invitees, so at least Conmebol returns the favor.

And having Brazil (even the U-23's) and Colombia in the GC improves the level of competition and probably helps on the business side.

Brazil's U-23s will still be a very good team, especially if they bring Robinho and Diego.

Haaaaaaaaaaaaaaa

US blew it by not going in turning them down once. You have the FMF to thank for opening the door. I thought it was real stupid on the USSF's behalf to put more emphasis and priority on the league play (MLS) than the national team. Truth is, the national team is what makes you or breaks you from a financial standpoint. If the US did well, they could get more investors which will eventually funnel down onto the MLS.

Actually, according to many, including experts like Bruce Arena, the national team is powered to a large degree by the existance of MLS. In other words, no MLS, no national team success. Given the record of the USMNT in the last world cup, I think the record favors Arena's view over yours!

They invite other teams because can you imagine the gates if say Panama or Haiti were to be in the tournament in the rose bowl or in miami as opposed to Brazil or Korea or Colombia. More people showing up. Larger imigrant population from these countries willing to pay money to watch these matches as opposed to the others in this region.

I know why they do it, but it still doesn't mean that its the right thing to do.

Your choice of Haiti as an example for your argument is a poor one, because there is a huge Haitian community in Miami. At the last Gold Cup myself & a few other Canadians sat in the midst of 15,000 Haitians at the Orange bowl.

Group A will be played at the Estadio Azteca in Mexico City, the only stadium in the world to have hosted two FIFA World Cup finals (1970 and 1986). Playing in Mexico will be the host country, three-time champion of the Gold Cup, who will be joined by Brazil and one of the two qualifiers from the Interzone (Caribbean and Central zones) playoff.

The Orange Bowl in Miami, Florida USA will play host to Group B, with defending Copa America champion Colombia heading the group. They will be joined by Guatemala and the winner of one of the Caribbean Zone final tournaments, matching Jamaica, Haiti, Martinique and Saint Lucia.

Gillette Stadium in Foxboro, Massachusetts will play host to the remaining two groups. Group C will be comprised of the USA, El Salvador and the second of the Interzone playoff qualifiers. Group D will consist of Costa Rica, Canada and the winner of the other Caribbean Zone tournament, between Trinidad & Tobago, Cuba, Antigua & Barbuda and Guadeloupe.

Matches in Groups A and B will be played on 13, 15 and 17 July, while Groups C and D will play on 12, 14 and 16 July. The opening day of the Gold Cup, 12 July at Gillette Stadium, is sure to be a tremendous day for soccer fans in the USA, as the two Gold Cup matches surround a Major League Soccer match between New England Revolution and NY/NJ MetroStars for an exciting tripleheader.

Quarterfinals 1 and 2 will be played in Foxboro on 19 July, while Quarterfinal 3 will be played in Mexico City and Quarterfinal 4 in Miami, both of those on 20 July. As host nations, Mexico and the USA will be automatically placed into Quarterfinals 1 and 3 respectively, should they qualify.
