Well teams in other leagues with restriction on number of foreign players do it all the time so its not impossible to make it work. They simply rotate the players to meet the restrictions. Seems pretty easy to me.
Anyway, it still doesn't stop us from buying him, putting him out on loan to belgium for half a season and then bringing him back to play under an EU passport. At less than 1m, it seems like it would have been a low risk, high reward situation to me. Now he'll cost somebody a lot more. Here's hoping that Diaby lives up to the hype because we missed the boat on a good one this time.
Not possible. He would have to start the two years again, thats our immigration laws. Here they are even more restricted. Plus Im pretty sure he has to be registered by the club in which country he is applying for EU citizenship.

kompany? oh wait this walcott deal could end up costing a fortune while lupoli has been and is still tearing apart the reserves. hmm.
I'm all for the walcott deal costing us a fortune. What's the alternative? That he fails to make the grade and we wound "saving" the 7 million GBP balance?

Therefore with Kolo, Gilberto and Lauren in the squad we can't really have another non-EU player.
So why doesn't Lauren apply for citizenship? Surely he's been with the club long enough to qualify (6 years in May).

Not sure - there could be many reasons. E.g. not all countries allow you to have duel nationality. Would he have to give up Congolese citizenship? He may not want to. He may not want to for tax implications.

Lauren is from Cameroon. Just sayin', Rick :) Those are all valid points.
I looked up UK Immigration policy on wikipedia. I found this: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/British_nationality_law#Requirements_for_naturalisation_as_a_British_citizen Specifically, "For those not married to a British citizen the requirements are:
five years legal residence in the UK
indefinite leave to remain or equivalent must have been held for 12 months
the applicant must intend to continue to live in the UK or work overseas for the UK government or a British corporation or association.
the same language and knowledge of life in the UK standards apply as for those married to British citizens"
Further, on dual nationality, "Many other countries, however, do not allow dual nationality (see Multiple citizenship). If you have British nationality, and are also a national of a country which does not allow dual nationality, the authorities of that country may either regard you as having lost that nationality or may refuse to recognise your British nationality. If you are a British national, and you acquire the nationality of a country which does not allow dual nationality, you may be required by the other country to renounce (give up) your British nationality in order to retain the other citizenship."

I thought he had citizenship via Spain, or am I just getting it mixed up because he spent so much time there.

Are you sure about that? When you say "our immigration laws" do you mean England, Belgium, or EU. I'm fairly sure that Belgium could give him an EU passport in 2 years. Once he had the EU passport, he could move to the Prem with no restrictions.
Anyway, if Wenger rated him then why didn't he pay Beveren to hold him until he got the passport instead of letting them sell him to a club in the Ukraine? Sorry, but this reads as Wenger not rating him not as a problem with his passport.

Is there a site that shows, or does anyone have, the team roster and their salaries? Or, for that matter, something that tracks it or similar info for multiple clubs? Just trying to see how certain players are rated and how that might impact multiple deals or targets, is all.

He was half a year from qualifying. There is no way we should be buying players to have them sit and not play because of not having a EU passport. No way. If he doesn't have one, we don't buy him. End of. It would disrupt having a settled team and just wouldn't work. No team would do that.Seņor Vela, no?Me too!!
So there is the answer re Lauren.I am under the impression that he has a Spanish passport (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bisan_Lauren) from his time in Spain. Is that incorrect?

Good call. But then we've come to expect as much from such a world traveler as yourself.

Just before the transfer window opened Wenger was saying he would only buy "special" players. What happens next? We sign two relatively unknown and inexperienced players from Ligue 1 and a kid with half a season behind him. Wenger may not have any more deals in the pipeline, but you would do well to take a pronouncement like this with a pinch of salt.
First, welcome aboard. As for your mention of Mascherano, I'm surprised we're not in for him, especially as we were previously rumoured to be keeping tabs on him. I have heard that Real Madrid are interested in him which will make it tough money-wise for us to compete. Also, being Argentinian, it gives him more of a shop window to stake his claims in his national team playing in La Liga, so it would make sense for him from that point of view.
Walcott IS a special player a la Rooney..and the cost was not a blockbuster price of an experienced "big-name" player..........more to come on that as per the Hill-Wood quote today on replacing Sol Campball, Pires and Freddie.

Check this out...
"Walcott, who could run the 100 meters in 11.5 seconds at age 14, said he hopes to make his Premier League debut this season."
11.5 seconds?! at age 14.. that's ridicoulous. The world record is 9.77 seconds, and he's doing 11 at age 14. My that's quick...
I read that he is faster than Henry...........and will be the Highbury Sprint Champion....

I've been thinking the same thing about Henry's pace but I've been afraid to say it. I almost crapped myself when Shrek outpaced him while tracking back at the end of our last meeting.

it's also a good deal harder running with the ball at your feet than tracking back. i have no doubt that henry is faster than rooney in a flat-out sprint.
