Dortmund has reached an agreement with Swiss striker Alex Frei on a deal starting next season. He still has a contract at Rennes until 2007 so he will cost some millions.
Someone posted that on another forum... not sure if true.
It's old news. Yes, BVB and Frei have a deal, but BVB can't pay the transfer fee Rennes want for Frei. Rennes want upwards of 10M for Frei and I don't think he's worth that much. Honestly, I'd be pissed if they pay half that. I'm sorry, but I'm just not enamored with most goal-scoring leaders from the French League or over-hyped Swiss players in general.
I'd take a striker who's cheaper and not as good if he has good Bundesliga experience and the potential to get better under BvM.
I'd take Frei too, but not at the price Rennes are asking. I'm sure we can get someone else nearly as good or even as good for less money.
Hell, right now, I think Koln wants 10M for Podolski. If we're going to pay that much for a striker, I'd take a run at him first!

Despite that we have no chance to sign Podolski (we don't play CL), I absolutely agree. Frei for affordable money? Yes. For 10 Mio Euro? Def no.

Who set that criteria? Podolski and his agent or the press??
Also, this is one of the reasons I said "take a shot at him". I know he'll probably wind up signing for Bayern, HSV or Bremen.

That's right man! Especially after seeing the improvements in players like Odonkor, Gambino and dare I say DEGEN, I don't think we have to get a striker with a "star name". I think we can get a striker with good potential and let BvM develop him.

DEGEN,
Way to go Keith. He's gonna hear that now, it's gonna get to his head, and he's gonna start sucking again.

Boy. You're either severely sexually repressed or have a severely warped sense of humor.
For your sake, I hope it's the second suggestion......
Not funny man. Not funny at all.

I am just sarcastic
As I don't think BvM had anything to do with degen (he still is a **********)
I think degen just saw himself out of the loop
and be honest as soon as kringe is fit again Degen is on the bench again
Kringe is a way better player

I should have known. You're only seeing this as a threat to a German player.
Did anyone f#cking say anything about Degen being "better" than Kringe??!
F#CK NO!!!!
We are just commenting on Degen's f#cking improvement, nothing more!
Degen's improvement helps the team, that's what the f#ck matters here. Not any personal feelings you have against the player.
The guy improves and helps the team and you still talk s#it.
Who's the b!tch in this scenario? I'll give you a hint. It's not me or Degen.
Sometimes I can't f#cking believe you're a BVB fan......

Over-hyped Swiss player? What makes you think that exactly? Have you ever seen him play before?

From BVB Mailing List (Thanks to KC) :
BVB interested in Salou?
Ibrahim Salou that is. NOT Bachirou.
**
Ibrahim Salou plays for SV Zulte-Waregem (http://www.svzw.be), currently 4th in the Belgian Jupiler League. Belgian sources say he is leaving after this season and that scouts from BVB,**AJ Auxerre**and Club Brugges have put their eyes on him.
**
Salou is a Belgian national, a striker and he**turns 27 this year in May: http://www.svzw.be/2006/akern.php?speler=20

8 goals this season in 19 matches.

Yes, I have. Don't let my location fool you. I'm very well-versed in the European game.
And I don't feel Frei is worth 10M Euros.
Sorry if I insulted you when I said "Over-hyped Swiss player", but that's how I feel. It mainly comes from the disappointment Philipp Degen has been for us so far, but in Degen's defense, he has looked much better in the past two matches.

Its not as if Frei has lighted it up this year too...5 goals in 19 games is not great stats. However, 20 goals 2 years in a row is. I think Frei can be a great striker at times. 10 mio euros though? Don't think so.

I partially agree with that now. At least for now. I think Gambino is better for the team than Buckley at the moment. I don't think he's a "better player". Not yet anyway.
BvM seems to be training Buckley for the other side. Which will help if Odonkor is ever hurt or suspended.
But yeah, Gambino has put together two good matches. As you said with Degen, let's see him keep it going.
My "beef" with you at the end is that no one mentioned one word about Degen being "better than Kringe". Not one darned word.
YOU came in with that BS. All we were talking about was Degen's improvement in the last couple of games and you came in with your personal feelings about Degen. Nobody cares about your personal feelings on Degen.
I don't care if Degen is the most self-centered b!tch on earth. If he does well for the team and doesn't cause trouble for BvM, that's all I care about.
And in the past two matches, Degen, as well as Gambino have done well for the team.
That's what matters to me. Not my personal feelings about either one of them or whether I was right or wrong. I'm glad to be wrong so far about Gambino and honestly, personally, I still don't like Degen much myself for the same reasons you stated, but that's not what matters to me on these boards. What they do for BVB on the pitch is what matters to me.

Do you guys know how much Alexander Frei works for the team and how many decisive passes he makes? Goal scoring is one thing but not the only thing that shows how good a striker is...
Let me give you an example on how vital Frei is for Switzerland for example:
1. Israël-Switzerland (2-2) 1 goal, one pass
2. Switzerland-Cyprus (1-0) He scored the winning goal
3. Faroe Island - Switzerland (1-3) 2 goals
4. Switzerland-Israel (1-1) Hits the post and scored one goal
5. Cyprus-Switzerland (1-3) Scores the first goal
6. Switzerland-Turkey (2-0) Made a decisive pass when Behrami scored
7. Turkey-Switzerland (4-2) Got a penalty, scored it and made a decisive pass.
Basically, Frei scored 7 goals and made 4 desicive passes and he his not on the top of his form.
Alexander Frei is not only a player that scores goals, he works hard for the team and gives a lot of good passes. I dont see any strikers that are better than him for the same price...

Israel, Faroe Islands, Cyprus, Turkey.
Will any of these nations be in Germany?
I think that answer is a clear No.
I'm sorry, but that list doesn't impress me one bit.
If he's a good striker, HE SHOULD post those kind of numbers against sorry teams like that.
Well, that is besides Turkey. They aren't "sorry", but they aren't what they used to be either.
No one is saying that Frei is a "bad player". We just don't feel he's worth the price Rennes is asking for him.
I know the kind of player you are describing. That's a good player.
We are losing one in Jan Koller. And since Koller has been down, BVB has been a better attacking team. We don't need another Koller.
As I said and others agreed with. We would definitely want Frei for Dortmund. But at a better price.
Sorry, but I don't feel your guy is worth 10M Euros even with your list. If he goes somewhere else and proves me wrong, then I'll gladly accept your "I told you so" and admit that I was wrong.
I'm never afraid to admit that I'm wrong. See our conversation on Salvatore Gambino.
I don't like to admit it, but I'm not afraid to do it. :)
Until then, I still say I will be very unhappy if BVB pays Rennes' price for Frei.
I just don't feel he's worth 10M Euros.........
