It seems we're in a similar situation with both making noises about wanting to join Borussia while still under contract elsewhere. Personally, if we're going to be asked to overpay in both cases, I'd rather fork out €5 million for someone with Bundesliga experience than €7-8 million for someone without. That said, if we don't complete a deal for either/both of these players before June, their performance at the World Cup could change their value pretty quickly. Whatever happens, we sure as hell need someone brought in before September.

Why even fork out 5M for someone with BL experience? Benjamin Auer (Mainz) is available on a free transfer.

However, I would like to bring in Valdez, Frei or Barbarez.

Btw, Barbarez will most likely move to Leverkusen. They have plenty (Berbatov-) money to spend and seem to have laid out the best bait.

That was what I said on the list not long ago. Also, "Bild" speculated yesterday that HSV hasn't given up on re-signing him.

ADDITION: I can think of one thing that might stop Barbarez from going to Leverkusen.

Barbarez was one of the players who had a big problem with Skibbe in Dortmund, wasn't he??? ;)

So it is still Valdez and/or Frei coming to Strobelallee. I still think that Frei is too expensive. Rennes want 7 Mio Euro and I wouldn't spend more than 4 Mio. Valdez is valued between 3 and 4.5 Mio and again I think 4.5 Mio is just too much money.

I can do without both of them if their clubs want that kind of money.

Get me Auer and Sanogo. That will set us up in the middle, we've already got more than enough wingers.......

Name me five players of that BVB squad that hadn't problems with Skibbe.

Btw, reminds me of Skibbe's quote about Thomas "Icke" Häßler: "A very talented player!" Actually Häßler was over 30y and world cup winner by then already.

Exactly. How many of them would have ever played for him again??

What makes you think Barbarez will??

I'd bet more on him re-signing with HSV.

Honestly, I think Leverkusen would be smarter to take Valdez out from under us.

I hated Skibbe for how he "handled" Haessler.

Skibbe just wasn't ready for that kind of position at that time.

Well, he was ready tactically and technically, but not mentally......

BOY WAS I WRONG...... :o

Everything I read at first was speculation....

Leverkusen sign striker Barbarez from Hamburg

BERLIN, May 17 (Reuters) - Bosnia and Hamburg SV striker Sergej Barbarez has signed a two-year deal with Bayer Leverkusen and will join them at the end of June.

"It's fantastic that we've signed such an experienced and capable striker for our young team," Leverkusen commercial manager Rudi Voeller said on Wednesday.

Barbarez, 34, had a strong season in Hamburg and was one of the keys to the club's jump to third place from the middle of the pack in the Bundesliga.

"Actually, I was hoping to stay in Hamburg, but we couldn't reach a deal," Barbarez said.

Leverkusen needed a replacement for Bulgarian striker Dimitar Berbatov, who will join English Premier League Tottenham Hotspur provided he obtains a work permit.

Frei isn't "for sure" leaving anyone according to this story. He's begging Rennes not to block a move to Dortmund.

I am talking about an interview he did 3 days ago. Like I already said, he said good bye to everybody in the Club! The supporters thanked him for all the gioals he scored and consider him as the best striker the club ever had...

I really don' t see why you need someone with Bundesliga experience? Scoring goal is the same principle eveywhere. Frei will NOT have any problem integrating himself. Frei is Swiss-German its not like if he was from Asia...

So what? Tomas Rosicky was trying to say "Goodbye" two years ago and he didn't go anywhere because BVB didn't let him.

I do think Rennes will sell Frei. But to whom remains to be seen.......

If another big club comes in with a nice transfer fee and a better salary for Frei, I'll bet his "desire" to join BVB will be gone with the wind.

And that's nothing against Frei. He would be silly not to accept a better offer. I'm just saying just because HE wants to join BVB doesn't mean that's where he will wind up.......

Because we've been burned by guys who were "Goal Scoring Kings" elsewhere, came to Germany and coudln't handle the defenses in the Bundesliga.

And as I asked another guy. Name the last French goal-scoring champion who moved to a better league and did anything.......

Again, this isn't about Frei or where he comes from.

This thing comes down to MONEY! I wish you would get that.

I am not like my colleague "HeyaBVB" and believe Frei is only worth 2M.

I think that opinion is crazy. However, if BVB pay more than 4 to 4.5M for him or pay so much for him that we cannot get Valdez, then I will be very upset......

I don't agree. If BVB can get Frei for between 2M and 4.5M, I will be happy. I just don't want us to "break the bank" for him.

After all, we also still need Valdez and some defensive midfield help......

Sure, to mention only 2, Didier Drogba and Djibril Cisse. back in the days Trezeguet and Henry were playing in Monaco

I understand what you are saying and it makes sense that Rennes might not let him come in Dortmund.

@ HeyaBVB: thanks a lot for your input... Like most of your post... very useful remarks

Being top scorer in France has some value, but not at the level of being the top goalscorer in leagues like Spain,Italy and England.

It doesn't guarantee that he'll be able to adapt to the team and the Bundesliga and be a great goalscorer.

It is more important to have a proben BL player like Valdez in Dortmund than to only have Frei. The best choice: get them both.If not possible:get Valdez.

thepundit

it's not necessarily that the French league's quality is so much lower, more important is the fact that strikers often fail to mesh with a new team/league/style/system. por ejemple, very few Latin strikers succeed in England 'cause the game is WAAAAAAAY different.

I can go with Drogba, but you surely aren't trying to convince me that Frei is a Drogba??

Cisse is laughable at best. He been a serious disappointment!

Rennes will try to sell him to whomever offers the most. Believe me, I would be happy to have him in Dortmund. I would hope he would be our next Chapuisat or be even better. However, what I don't want BVB to do is break the bank for him. That is the major reason I was saying "No" before.

Nothing against Frei personally.......

It looks like BVB will finalise the most important transfer deals within the next 10 days.

- Atletico Madrid is now willing to pay Rosicky's 10 Mio Euro fee in cash and not strechted over several years.

- Bremen and Rennes are lowering their demands and it seems likely that both strikers will join us.

- Buckley's destination might not be Bielefeld but England. Fulham and Tottenham would be able to meet BVB's and Buckley's demands (transfer fee+salary).

- There are rumours in Cologne that Imre Szabics is in negotiations with BVB

- Rumours in Porto are that BVB is interested in Diego of FC Porto (though he signed with Werder Bremen yesterday).

I guess better now so we can really get prepared for next season......

I want them to gamble and wait until after the World Cup, but 10 million is 10 million. I can understand making the move. I would love to watch Rosicky feeding Kezman over the next few years......

Keith's Response: GOOD!!! I still don't want to pay more than 4.5M for Frei though......

Buckley's destination might not be Bielefeld but England. Fulham and Tottenham would be able to meet BVB's and Buckley's demands (transfer fee+salary).

Keith's Response: I wanted to keep him, but money is money. Even if Tottenham only offers 1M or more, we still win out.

I hope that works out.

There are rumours in Cologne that Imre Szabics is in negotiations with BVB

What for? Where would he play?? Replacement for Gambino?

Rumours in Porto are that BVB is interested in Diego of FC Porto (though he signed with Werder Bremen yesterday).

Hadn't heard those rumors and I read in Bild am Sonntag that Diego signed with Bremen. There was no way we could afford Diego.

After getting Wome too, I guess Bremen are really loading up to make a run at BayScum.

I really think Bremen have to be title favorites for next season........
