by the way folks, if anyone happens to have extra cash and no plans from now until wednesday it would be a good idea to visit Trinidad. it's carnival!!!I have a Trinidad-related Carnival question for you. In New Orleans, there are (or used to be :( ) bands of people calling themselves Mardi Gras Indians, although they are largely African-American by heritage. They would make ornate costumes inspired by native american dress, using lots of bright colors and feathers; and, rival "tribes" would secretly organize "street fights" during carnival season (they would actually just dance and posture and sing and carry on, not actually fight). It has always been my favorite part of the season, trying to find the Mardi Gras Indians marching (they were never announced, so typical Joe-tourist never knows how to find them) and join in their singing and revelry.

Anyway, I know they were partly influenced by Caribbean immigration to New Orleans, in addition to an affinity between African Americans and native Americans in the South during slavery and Jim Crow. I'm wondering if there's any tradition like that in Trinidad, to your knowledge? (I should probably just go research it, but I thought I'd ask you first :D ).

Here's a picture for those people that have never seen them (Sadly, it's a tradition that destroy the costumes each year after Mardi Gras, and begin for the next year):

Don't worry its not. You melt the pb in the microwave then mix the rest. You can slice up a banana and put that in it too. Blueberry isn't the best, strawberry and such go best.

Don't really taste the cottage cheese that much, its mostly just protein. If someone hasn't tried it, you will be suprised how well peanut butter goes with alot of things, especially fruit/fruitflavored things.

I might try it if I'm feeling brave.

This sounds more like a punishment than anything else. Do you have bad kidneys or a gimpy pancreas or something that necessitates the eating of such wierd combinations? :D

Once I've thought more about this, it doesn't seem so gross. I mean, peanut butter and any kind of ice cream is one of the best treats I can think of. So, instead of ice cream, you're using yogurt, which isn't all that different. I'm not as afraid now as I was at first glance. And I will be trying this soon.

Plus, this combination has TONS of protein from nuts and dairy. It must be a body-building concoction.

Yes, during carival people will dress up in costumes co-ordinated into bands and each band will have several different sections, its not uncommon to have a native american section in some bands. In modern times most bands' costumes feature very little actual costume, pretty much a bathing suit for women and trunks for guys with assorted feathers decorations etc. However, in what is called now "Ole Mass" you'll see the traditional Carnival characters and carriacatures and the Amerindian (our word for Indians of the Americas) costumes are more prevalent there.

Indians inhabited the islands just like they did the mainland and although they are pretty much gone, we still celebrate that they are part of our history, hence the costumes.

or just google "Trinidad Mas" or Trinidad Carnival and you can find out lots.

If you or anyone else is interested the trinidadexpress.com will feature alot of Carnival news and probably photos from Sunday till Wednesday as well.

I just found the recipe on one of those health sites (well it was just yogurt and pb). I toughened it up to get more protein in it (although yogurt and pb both have a good amount for regular food) without changing much taste. Also nuts add protein you know. I dunno, I think you all should try it before you hate it. ;)

OTOH, steaks and fried sweet potatoes tonight with the folks.. ate too much. :(

Thank ya very much ;)

upon further examination and the polling of my great aunt and great uncle it seems that the portrayal of Amerindians indigenous to the Caribbean was the initial idea, but that later on it was bastardized and infact just copies the western stuff that people saw in the movies. :D
