When they hired him, I thought it was as astute as Newcastle hiring Graeme Sounness, but kept them up and they seem to be doing about as well as they can this year.

Theres a lot of Albion fans that didn't want him. The older ones are still bitter about him going to Man Utd all those years ago and some just think he was a crap manager. Others are still fond of Gary Megson so whoever came in it would have been tough for them to win some of the fans over. On the other hand, there are many that like him and back him and the team.
Personally, i think he's done as good a job as he could have done so far. He took a team that was going down and kept them up and this year has also brought in a lot of young players for the future. There isn't much more he could have done really. At times he makes some really strange decisions - such as always bringing everybody back to defend corners and leaving nobody up, refusing to put Earnshaw even on the bench but letting Horsefield get on and letting Darren Carter play so often. However, most managers make decisions that aren't apparently obvious to most fans sometimes.
He's doing ok i suppose. It's not like Albion should be pushing for Europe or anything.

Let me simply agree with what A+E said above.

Robbo's made some funny decisions during his tenure at Albion. While I can't say I'm completely happy with everything he's done since he became manager, I can honestly say the club has progressed since he took over.

Losing to Reading was embarrassing. But until we dip back below 17th place, you won't hear many serious calls from Albion fans to sack him this season.

If we somehow become more "established" in the top flight, expectations will certainly increase in future seasons.
