View Full Version : Poll: The subforum title

Since this subforum has gone up, folks have been calling for the deletion of the word "Morals" from the title. There has been a bit of traffic here, and there has been a nascent group of "regulars", so I think it's as good a time as any to launch a poll on the subject.
The arguments, as far as I can see, are as follows:
In favor of deleting "morals": Morals is a philosophical term of art which has little, if anything to do with religion or spirituality, but rather with pure reason. In fact, in order to be best discussed, morals cannot be placed in a religious or spiritual framework, because that would strip all reason from the discussion.
Opposed to deleting "morals": Morals, as has been more commonly used of late, refers to the notion of right and wrong. Some folks get their idea of right and wrong from pure logic, others from religion, others from a blend of any and all of the above. Leaving out "morals", and merely having a "Religion and Spirituality" subforum would not allow for any atheistic points of view on the forum, which would leave a gaping hole in discussion.
I've also left a "substitute" option open. If you can think of a word that would better allow for an atheist or agnostic POV than "morals", I'd certainly love to hear it.

Well, I voted for the title as-is. Morals and religion are certainly interrelated, and while we could have chicken and egg conversations as to which came first, for the practical point, my morals and my religion are the same. I became a Christian 20 years ago, but I was raised by parents who's morals came from their faith. Now, if you want to start a philosophy forum, have at it. And lastly, faith is a rational faith. I was sold the spiritual bill of goods as an adult and chose freely to believe. It was a conscious, rational act. So I disagree with your assertion above.

Seriously? Basically I've got no problem with the name as-is. I understand Chad's argument as to why Morality is not comparable to the other two in a normative sense, but the anthropologist in me says that, descriptively, morality and religion are all over the map and that's where most of our discussions go anyway, so...

The hit titled "Why Atheist Spirituality is not an Oxymoron" would make a wonderful thread in and of itself. Fascinating read, written by a UU layperson. Thanks, Crimen :)

You could not possibly have done a better job of illustrating the need for an atheist POV in this subforum. :)

You were being serious about "Pink Elephants"? Come now... You're going to have to explain the relevance of that one.

This poll is so disingenuous.
It's as if I created a forum called "christopher d and **************s." Then someone, who knows Christopher D, said "but he's not an **************" and I replied "well, I am not convinced and still think he could be".

I don't like "World Rivalries". Consequently, I don't post in World Rivalries, nor do I frequent that board. Indoor soccer does nothing for me, so you'll never see me over there, either.
When this subforum went up, you raised a point on its title that I honestly hadn't considered. It still isn't clear to me why spiritual-based and atheistic moral compasses cannot discuss matters of interest, each from his POV. But that's not the point -- that issue is clear to plenty of other people. So, I wanted to see if the majority of folks who've been frequenting the board wanted a change. So far, they do.
Apparently "disingenuous" is another philosophical term of art I don't understand.

Look, you made a mistakem and instead of fixing it, you have chosen to put the burden on others to convince you. It is hardly a surprise you are a theist.
I don't know what you do for "work", but my guess is you would care if some non-expert was saying all kinds of wrong sh!t about it.

How about.....
Organised Religion v's The Gospel According to St Thomas?
or
Apathy, the only way forward?
I realise these might actually be better thread topics, but hey we're all Christians here, right?

Is the poll going to be up until the result is what chris d wants?
In that case, why even have a poll?
To sum up, the people who know about the differences between morality and the others would like it changed, including several academics. But yet becuase the moderator initially made the mistake and is too proud to change it, he is waiting until the poll gets him his result.
What was that about disingenuous?
Why does chris hate being corrected and is so unwilling to own up?
