View Full Version : Support for Buzz and 3rddegree.net

I want to take a moment and ask for some simple support for Buzz and 3rddegree.net coverage.
While MLS is spending millions on new SSS's and international players; Buzz is spending his own money producing excellent, exciting coverage like the Combine (http://www.3rddegree.net/thirdindex.cfm?page=article&show=1097).
There is now a renewed effort in supporting his overseas coverage that, simply stated, Buzz cannot afford without your help. So, in a cooperative spirit; I've setup an Auction (http://www.promogoods.com/forum/auction_room.php) site that donates every listing dollar (http://www.bigsoccer.com/forum/showpost.php?p=7226420&postcount=38) from your auction item(s) toward Buzz's great coverage.
Every dollar helps; so please don't hesitate in helping the cause. Thanks for your participation!

Don't forget Wade Jackson, Andy Mead, and Scott Bales who are spending their own money producing excellent, exciting photo coverage of MLS and the USMNT.
How about some of that money for Yellow Card Journalism, which has a long history of covering overseas games on their own dime.

And let's not forget to support the Mid-Atlantic Soccer Guys who spend their own money providing in-depth coverage of all things DC United.

Hey Andy, I always assumed that you attempted to sell your photos to other media such as magazines and websites for content? Your travel is on your own dime only in the sense that you pay for the trip but you hope in return you sell some photo's to pay yourself. In my mind this is a bit different then Buzz going to Spain to follow Dallas FC preseason by buying his own ticket and only posting it on 3rddegree. I realize that he has advertising on his site, but I would imagine that only helps with the cost of hosting the site. Please let me know if I am totally off.

I was going to donate to Dallass page but then I thought of something better to do with that money and see if I can run it through shredder.

Also, let's not forget the various small time bloggers (http://dcunitedblog.blogspot.com), who promise to spend your donations on alcohol, women, and... well, we'll just say substances. At some point, they may actually do some worthwhile journalism, provided it doesn't involve something like walking, or thinking, or not drooling on themselves. I mean, where else are you going to spend that 5 minutes you have at your deskafter finishing off the lunch you picked up at one of the innumerable Chinese food pay-by-the-pound buffets on M Street? Surely that's worth something. Aside from another reprimand from your boss about productivity, I mean.
Well, okay, I'll see who I can pitch in for. Those photos from YCJ really are good.

The odd editorial photo usage or assignment fee here and there just about covers gas costs and some hotel bills. It does nothing for the airfare, most of the hotels and travel related expense, our own web hosting, or our camera equipment acquisition and repair costs.
We are attempting to find clients and receive payment for our products such that it pays for our efforts. I would assume that Buzz - if he's looking for financing - has contacted Soccernet or Fox Soccer Channel's website or even MLSnet about supplying editorial content for a cost.
Buzz does wonderful coverage.
As do many other editorial and photography based individuals and groups that have grown from the early fan-based news services. And it is a huge cash drain. At this point, I might have been better off financially having a crack habit the last three years instead of a soccer photography one.
I'd stack YCJ's red ink against anyone elses.
But I'm not looking for donations, I'm desperately trying to find a business model that turns that around.

So my dream of making my millions following around U.S. soccer players and taking pictures doesn't fit the reality? Bummer. So much for the private jet to take to matches. Thank for the clairification Andy. I say support all those who love the game and are willing to share their experience through commentary, photos, whatever. Now if we could just get Britney Spears to have Lando's love child that could change the model. I am back to my crack pipe.

Indeed and Agreed.
The fact is, pretty much every MLS team has folks who put in way too much money and time in the thankless job of providing "inside local" coverage that the mainstream press doesn't.
While Buzz Carrick is one of the most thorough and professional - and a nice guy, to boot - he ain't the only one out there.

absolutely, there is good stuff all over the web where folks are working hard to support the league and their side. i think we're fortunate that you, the buzz dude and others work so hard with no real return in the near future. at least for barra-brava.com we don't have the travel expenses YCJ or 3rd Degree have.

I'm sure my posting here and in a couple of the other spams in this series is going to piss Buzz off. To be fair, he didn't start these threads.
But as for the travel expense - that's a personal decision. Buzz doesn't have to spend his vacation time and money going to spring training, or the combine, or the draft. He chooses to. The same thing with YCJ covering the USMNT in Guatemala, Panama, Grenada, and Mexico during WCQ. It's our choice.

Yes; you choose what you do - as I choose to support Buzz, for no profit, and the higher cause of The Beautiful Game.
A very wise man once gave a loose interpretation for insanity... Doing the same things over and over again and expecting different results.
May you and Buzz one day receive fair value for all the obvious passionate work you perform.

Well, I've heard of brass balls but this is the first time I've seen platinum! If I'm understanding correctly, you want me to send money to support a guy, not because he's dying or been the victim of a horrible disaster, but because he can't afford to do his hobby and/or volunteer work?
If I actually got paid for the work I do for the SEs it would be at least double than what I'm making at my actual job (and I'm certainly not alone here) and as Andy said, we all make choices in life.
Wow, just wow!

And the thing is, he needs donations to go to Spain to cover FC Dallas. I really don't see how it's relevant to go on other teams' message boards to beg.
