Did you not really want to go to Clemson?
Yes I did. I love Clemson. I am a die-hard Clemson football fan. I grew up 30 miles from Clemson. It was the only school I applied to. I just happened to love Duke basketball when I was 11.
I realize the oddity in all of it...but I'm an odd person anyway. :o

No offense intended.....but it's extremely odd. I could even understand it if you went to a non-ACC school and liked Duke on the side......but having gone to Clemson??

ILL-INI!

P.S. Duke sucks. Actually I respect them as a team and the fact that they've been able to stay successful for so long under one coach (the Man United of college basketball?). But they still suck-diddly-vck and its always a relief when they go down in the tournament.
I went to law school with a guy who was a bench warmer on that Flying-Illini team that went to the Final 4......in 1989, I think.

Yep, that was '89. Don't really remember it myself though, since I wasn't living in Illinois at the time, plus I was all of 7 years old. But up until last year's run to the championship, that team was all anybody talked about.

how did gator countrie treat you during football seasonIt's very cool here for football games. The city revolves around the games on football saturdays. I wasn't totally into watching the games this season, so I was free to jog around the stadium area during/after the games. That was the most fun - listening to the stadium rock and chatting with tailgaters.

Did you go to Duke?
No. It is common knowledge on certain boards as to what school I attend.
Did you grow up in London a stone's throw away from Highbury?

Don't be snippy.....it was an honest question. I vaguely recall you attending school somewhere in NY but I don't recall if you're in undergrad or grad school so it's entirely possible that you went to Duke for part of school.

Sorry about that yoss, but with the current anti-Duke climate on Big Soccer I had to come out with the guns blazing. I was sure a comment about glory-hunting was coming next. Should have known better than to expect that sort of thing from you though. No hard feelings?
Close on the state. I go to Bates College in ME. Currently an undergrad.
Of course, I don't want to get an off-topic thread off-topic now. :p

Oh, don't get me wrong......I hate Duke with the best of them.....:p ......but as I said to MtP07 in this thread, I don't care if you root for a certain basketball team different than your alma mater.....although for him being a Clemson grad....it's very very weird, IMHO.
Good friend of mine went to Bates and he's also a Duke basketball fan.....weird coincidence.....of course his dad used to teach there and his parents still live in NC.
By way of personal anecdote, I was a huge Georgetown fan as a kid and really wanted to go there for undergrad. That's not the way things ended up but I still maintained a fondness for the team.

I was born in Maryland and didn't move to Georgia until later. But yes, once I started going to UGA I became a full-blooded Dawg fan. I still rooted for Georgetown but would've sided with my alma mater if they had ever played each other in basketball.
I hate Duke for the same reason most Duke haters do......they're usually so effing good. Another reason for me though is that I hate the mythology around the Duke players that they are all some sort of model for the perfect scholar athlete.....like when Vitale (ad nauseum) goes on about how great they are and his inane "1400 SAT's baby...." Bleck, it's just not true. One of my ex-girlfriends went to Duke and she's said that Laettner and Hurley were both dumber than a box of rocks. Now, admittedly, it's not the fault of the Duke players what Vitale says, etc., etc.,...but it's annoying nevertheless. Just be content that they're great basketball players and leave it at that.
I do have a ton of respect for Coach K though. He's obviously one of the greats.

Our players intelligence is hyped, but compared to schools like Cincinatti, Miami, etc., Duke at least does pay attention to the student part of student-athlete. To what extent is beyond my knowledge.
Coack K is a GOD.

Makes sense.
Anyone have any opinions about the new look ACC and Big East. I absolutely hate it myself. I have always loved the way the ACC was. I really could care less about these new times that were brought in just for the football. Never particularly cared about the Big East, but I am sure there are traditionalists out there that didn't like the way things went down. What do you guys think?

Oh, no doubt.....probably better than a lot of schools......just not to the extent that was/is hyped.

For football, the new configuration really hurt the Big East.....based on the quality of the teams that left if nothing else. For basketball, I don't see it having near as much of an impact. Other than BC (who really were still marginal) the traditional Big East basketball teams are all still there. Georgetown, Seton Hall, St. Johns, Nova, Providence........they don't call it the Catholic school league for nothing.

No doubt that Big East football was left in shambles. No Miami and Va Tech to carry those weak teams anymore. The basketball actually got better if you are just looking at the quality of the teams. Of course, I'm coming at this as a Duke fan, so I don't care about the football portion of the ACC because we will suck at that regardless. On the basketball side, we only play NC State and Ga Tech once each this year thanks to the new schools. NC State are our Tobacco Road neighbors and we only play them once now!!! That is just ridiculous to me. The quality of ACC basketball, which is what the ACC has been about since I was born, took a big hit because they wanted thefootball money that schools like Miami and Va Tech bring. I get angry thinking about it.

I may be many things.....a windup merchant is not one of them.
I still think your preference is bizarre. Would your Clemson friends tar and feather you when Duke came to town? Your affinity for Duke didn't extend to soccer too, did it? ;)
Non-sequitar.....I love going up to Clemson for soccer games. Nice little stadium....good atmosphere. I even went to Tiger soccer camp as a young lad for two summers in a row. Good old I.M. Ibrahim. Whatever happened to that Ferrari driving nut? And geez, I think that practice field was the hottest freaking place in the world in late June.
