Really unique perspective on the competion soccer has historically faced in the pointy-ball dominated cities and culture within the US.

When I came to the US as a kid, the sports I played were cricket, field hockey, and soccer, in that order. I taught myself football US-style by watching the Redskins on TV, and have been hooked ever since. I didn't have the money to go to a lot of Dips games, so my soccer was limited to school teams, weekend kickarounds w/ local kids, and "Soccer Made in Germany" w/ Toby Charles.

The sporting landscape has changed radically since then (for the better, IMO)

I liked these quotes, "I'm suffering like this was a soccer match," and "Central American immigrants generally reserve their ardor for D.C. United or even the Washington Wizards.

At El Cuzco, a restaurant and bar serving Salvadoran specialties in Langley Park, few customers bothered to watch Washington beat the Tampa Bay Buccaneers last Saturday.

"They don't know this game. They are bored by it," said the manager, Lorena Ruiz."

The only time I have ever agreed with someone named Ruiz.

I love the idea of this article.

Where United is bringing gringos like myself and my brother to an amazing sport (and amazing people in La Barra Brava) the Redskins are bringing people from traditionally soccer based cultures into an American one. My favorite redskin moment of this season was the Sikh Redskin fan celebrating with the player in the endzone at Fed Ex.

Its the yin and yang of life and the kind of thing I personally love to see.

As people of the earth we are all (U)nited :D
