They're fairly popular over here. The album Z was in many critics' Top 10 list this year. My wife who isn't the least bit pretentious about music and doesn't read what the critics say can't stand it.

Personally, I think it's the worst album of their four full length releases. That's not a "I don't like it because it's gained mainstream acceptance" thing either, I just don't think it's a good record.

I think there's a few good tunes on it, but as a whole, it pales in comparison to their previous stuff.

I'd rank their albums in this order:

1. It Still Moves
2. At Dawn
3. The Tennessee Fire
4. Z

If "Lay Low" is one of your favorites off of Z, I think you'd like the others much better, especially It Still Moves and to a lesser extent At Dawn.

I'll defiantly be getting some of their other albums after Z.

Seriously these guys were one of my favorite bands before Z, but i found that to be just a bad, bad album.

For me....

At Dawn
Tennessee Fire
It Still Moves
Z

Then again At Dawn was the first I heard of theirs, so it may just be sentimental. But At Dawn and Tennessee Fire both still get heavy rotation, while the others don't.

I understand the previous poster's dislike of Z, but I am gonna defend it anyway.

I think it is actually their best effort to date. I do skip the track with the fairground type music on it, but other than that I really like it.

At Dawn is a great album too but I put Z right up there with it.

I do skip the track with the fairground type music on itYour talking about In the woods. It is an absolutely brilliant song. When the drums kick in and he starts singing - beautiful. Keep listening to that track. You wont be disappointed.

I bought when it came out and enjoyed it more than their previous album. The other sounded to close to Neil Young.

Regarding MMJ, One Big Holiday is one of my favorite guitar solos of all time!

Not sure if the BigSoccer weirdness affected this thread with its multiple posts, but I'm bumping this link just in case.

"Off the Record" sounds awful in this concert

It's mostly because it's an awful song.

I know you don't like them and I can understand why that song grates. I have warmed to it some.

But James' vocals just sound like crap on this live version. Good song or not.

I wonder whether he suffers live because of the lack of reverb that he uses heavily in studio versions.
