Last two world cups we had two different needs. 98' We needed (other then a coach) offense. 2002 we were looking at defense at the start.
Now in my opinion we are so rail thin in the Midfield. Who will step? We are all hoping for a miracle for JOB and Reyna.
What do you all think? I see we are getting our Midfield ready for 2010 in theory. But now , we need an American middie with intensity and grit to go along with talent and touch. Edgar Davids, of years past, his style is what I think we will need. That is my biggest concern for our team.
And also, I hope we are negoiating with at least one African team and one strong Eastern Europian Team for pre WC matches. Guatemala!?

Well, players like Edgar Davids don't come along every day; otherwise there wouldn't be any threads saying we need a player like him.
That obvious statement out of the way, Reyna can be a poor man's version of Davids. In a 2002 friendly, Reyna more than held his own against Davids, even though the Netherlands won the game 2-0. They beat us with the long ball, which Reyna couldn't really do much about...

Well who is my question to myself, I am not a real big Reyna fan. And before I get bashed, he is one of our greatest talents ever yes, but he seems so complacent sometimes, for me anyway. We might have a real tough time against Ghana, real tough.

cobi's got dreads like davids... if we can cobi to wear some orange colored shades, it'd be hard to tell em apart.. :D
as for gritty, olsen worked pretty hard in that scotland game.. not sure how effective he'll be against more mobile teams tho..

I have always believed that if Davids was an American he would be the very first true soccer superstar in this country!!
The Glasses, the toughness and dreads would make him a marketing dream!!
Lets face it it would be alot harder for sportscasters to call Davids a wussy than lets say Landon! ( no offense to LD!!)

If we make Grenada the 51st state, we can have Shalrie Joseph. and ... Maybe if BRUCE had been a little more pro-active Shalrie might already be wearing the Red, White & Blue of the US.
As a poster in another thread wrote. Let's hope John O'Brien can get healthy for another month this summer.

When watching the Fire in the past, Chris Armas reminded me of Davids in that "pitbull" type roll. He has not been healty as of late so I don't know if he even has a shot at making the US team this year. Then again I would not really compare the two, it's just that Armas could be considered a Davids type player with about 75% of Davids skill.

Joseph would be great wouldnt he? Someone get Bush on the phone and get this 51st state thing taken care of immediately.

I think Reyna is a great player , and it would be great to have a tough guy in the middle like Davids , thats not the type of team we are. We are a very athletic team , and Davids is great, but I'm fine with a healthy Reyna, JOB , DMB , and a right mid .......... someone please

I hope so, cant seem to shake his comment after the 98 WC.. where after losing evrything from games to respect...HE said in a paraphrase
We just Wanted to get respect...WHAT! He seems to be a great person and an AMAZING CAPTAIN America and I will pull for Him and eat crow with a smile when he proves me wrong against Essien and All before him.
It killed me reading that though, I have no desire to get the opponents respect in any other way then to fight them hard. Thats why i like Frankie Hejduk, when He said in 02 WC ...
" We gave them respect before the game but once we crossed the white lines we gave them none, nothing"

_Ben_ Olsen?
I was actually just naming names. The only players i really want playing there would be Reyna and JOB, maybe Mastroeni. I dont like Zavagnin, and Mulrooney was good before his last two injuries, but i suspect he is a long shot.

" We gave them respect before the game but once we crossed the white lines we gave them none, nothing"is that true, verbatim? that's a great quote.
kind of a-hole for Brasil to say, but for US at that point in time, pretty awesome.

I would hardly call our midfield rail thin, Reyna will probaly be healthy by then and JOB is still a possibility. But say they are both injured in June, we could still start the tournament with a midfield consisting of,
------Mastro
DMB---------Convey
--------LD
which I would be fully confident in, although Reyna and/or JOB would be nice we're still in an OK position without them. I think the bigger question is whose going to be up front. McBride is still going strong, but he's not getting any younger and he'll go into the WC having just finished a gruelling EPL season, which can take a toll on a player his age. EJ looked to be the answer but we havent seen much of him since he got injured leaving questions about how good of form he'll be in.
