Please rate us, your forum Mods (Blizzard, DoyleG and Gordon) and how we moderated this forum, Canada, in 2005. These polls have been created at the request of the BigSoccer Admins in an effort to improve our community and clarify our newly revised community guidelines for the coming year. Please be honest, civil, and fair in your responses. After one week, we will attempt to respond and address your praise and criticism.

Please use the thread as an opportunity to provide feedback. Please note all comments are public intentionally. Your vote, however, will not be public.

Mods will not respond for 7 days. This should allow everyone time to cool off and answer maturely.

SuperMods and Admins will review all results and bring up problems and praise situations in the SuperMods boards.

Mods will be urged to bring up points of praise and concern on the Mods board for further discussion as well.

A bit about myself. I have been a Big Soccer Member since May of 2002 and a Moderator on the Canada Forum since December of 2005. So I am relatively new to the Mod game. This is the only forum that I do moderate.

OK, Sorry all. Third time is the charm. Couldn't keep up with the instructions properly and made the poll public. So, recycled the previous one and started anew. For the two who voted, thanks, please vote again.

I don't intend this to be a bash, but I wanted to make my vote public to allow the exercise to be fully effective.

I gave an F.

That decision was because of (what I believe was) the unprofessional way the "Toronto to the MLS" thread was handled by Doyle--I have no issues with the other mods.

Doyle is, of course, entitled to his opinion. However, I believe he overstepped his authority while debating on that thread as he was belligerent and controlling (closed the thread on a couple occasions for no apparent reason other than his disagreement with the arguments) throughout the discussion.

The situation ended with the Supermods having to step in—on more than one occasion.

Full disclosure—I’m not a fan of his posting style. Never have been. But, my decision to publicly post today has nothing to do with my opinion of him. Rather, it has to do with the way he handled his responsibilities on that thread.

I agree that DoyleG isn't a very good moderator. He doesn't seem to want any discussion on opinions he doesn't agree with. I thought he acted very childish in his "MLS is bad for Canada" thread. That kind of behavior isn't becoming of a moderator. I think that Gordon and Blizzard do an excellent job and that overall the Canada forum is very well run. I give the forum a B+.

This is the thread I'm referring to.

Please note that I was not a participant in it.

And lastly, I'm not suggesting that Doyle was the only person in that thread who acted inappropriately. However, I believe that mods should be held to a higher standard than "regular posters."

Valid comments. Points taken.

I believe that those difficulties have been worked through by our Supermod and ourselves and I don't believe that you'll see anything like that occurring in the future.

Things have been very smooth of late and hopefully they'll stay that way.

BTW, Gordon wasn't a mod at that time but is now so that will also help keep things on even keel.

I should also add that while traffic is slow, all of you guys have been great!

thx

I also gave an F for much the same reasons with the same caveats. I tend to avoid this forum now because of the one moderator in question.

Understandable but he has been very quiet lately so take a look in now and then and if things look OK to you, please become involved once again.

Oh wait! Did you mean me?

Blizzard was definately an A
Gordon is like a referee, if you don't see him then he had a great game.

Doyle G .............................well lets see.
The guy gets an F, his little temper tantrum where he shut down the Toronto to the MLS thread and his jihad on all things Toronto and MLS was actually a worse performance than almost anyone else on the board.

Doyle would have been a B for me if he had just basically said "I messed up, I'm human and I made an error sorry." The guys human but his continued verbal assault on people and ideas means he's not mature or intelligent enough to be a Mod.

I actually haven't voted because I don't want to tar Blizzard who was exceptional in opening up the thread and Gordon with Doyle's brush.

Ummm OK, I think I started something I didn't want to start. I was being "cute" but I don't want to annoy anybody especially my fellow mods.

I'm thrilled that Gordon is with us as he's a good guy and we know his track record here and at "V".

I hope that we'll be able to up our traffic as time goes by.

What's past is past and I think we can have some good fun information exchanges. Let's let bygones be bygones and look towards the future.

Cheers all,

I see no sign of a change in DoyleG's posting behaviour:-

My opinions echo those of the others who have spoken up so far.

Bkizzard and Gordon have done a fair job (which is all you can expect from a mod; for them to be fair) while DoyleG has treated this forum as his own little playground for personal attacks and other inexcusable behaviour.

As Blizzard pointed out, he has recently been much less vocal, although I wonder whether that's his doing or the supermods. Regardless, his continued presence as a mod taints the overall forum, as much as I appreciate the job both Blizzard and Gordon are doing.

I'd give Blizzard and Gordon an 'A', and DoyleG an 'F'. Overall I think a 'C' is fair.

Lose the dead weight and that grade instantly jumps to 'A' overall.

I am going to unstick the thread now that the poll has closed. we'll let it sink or swim on its own merits now. A few comments on my part:

As Blizzard points out, I was only a recent addition to the Mod team, coming on board in late december. There were others during the year who moderated as well who did not get mentioned in the poll as they are no longer mods. Joe McCarthy is one, and if IIRC, Canadian Supporter. The positive comments directed my way were clearly intended for those two as they did a fine job during their tenure and certainly had more to do with the operation of the board in 2005 than I did.

At the top of the forum is an announcement thread, and the topic is new forum standards. This was generated by Huss and the supermods with considerable feedback and imput from the various moderators. There are many elements to the announcement, and it should be checked out by all. Among the many standards is an expectation that mods will conduct themselves to a higher standard of behaviour. Mods who don't measure up will be removed. There are also some statments on poster responsibility and these are important too. The forum is a creature of its posters not its mods, so it is up to all of us to set the tone.
