-- The standard stuff we’re supposed to say --

Please rate your forum mods, MeridianFC and Knave, and how they moderated the DC United forum in 2005.

These polls have been created at the request of the BigSoccer Admins in an effort to improve our community and clarify our newly revised community guidelines (http://www.bigsoccer.com/forum/showthread.php?t=288884) for the coming year.

Please use this thread as an opportunity to provide feedback. Please note all comments are public intentionally. Your vote, however, will not be public. Your comments can address both the way the board is moderated and the way individual Mods moderate. Please be honest, civil, and fair in your responses.

After one week, the mods will attempt to respond and address your praise and criticism. This should allow everyone time to cool off and answer maturely. SuperMods and Admins will review all results and bring up problems and praise situations in the SuperMods boards.

A little background about your mods: MeridianFC is bald. Knave has a full head of hair. For better or worse they both know an odd fellow whose initials are MFF.

-- A little non-standard addition --

We were supposed to post this yesterday but we delayed it a day on account of revelation's decision to quit moderating this forum.

We're planning to add one or two new mods to this board in light of his departure, but we don't intend to deal with that matter until after this review is completed.

First, I think that online moderating is a time-consuming, soul-sapping, thankless job. And it's incredibly important for any healthy on-line community to have at least one dedicated (read: someone without a life) fool...er, uh....professional, to spend their time dealing with anal retentive nuts like me and sarcastic wits like Sachin (well, okay, just sarcastic) and in-your-face jobs like OwenDylan (perhaps in-your-********** is a bit more accurate) and people with cat festishes and unrequited love for the Cartographer (Ursula, you know who you are). So my thanks go out to anyone who's ever stepped up and done this job (fortunately, the pay is commiserate with the pain, is it not?).

But I think we're especially lucky to have have the group with this forum that we've had. I've always felt that the DCU Forum had the liveliest, best, most informed, most in-depth and most diverse exchanges on Big Soccer (and there is a lot to offer on BS). To that, I tip my virtual hat to Knave, Rev (RIP) and Meridian and even the long-departed JH6 (who's moderating days are now the stuff of legend--in his own mind).

Second, maybe I've just become more used to the hurly-burly nature of BS but it seems to me that things got a little "smoother" or more accomodating in our virtual DCU world this year. Less outright confrontation, fewer insults about thread tags and more exchange (instead of ships passing in the night or fools hurling invectives). Maybe it's b/c we had fewer references to bones scans in 2003 or the initial unveiling of The Freddy occurred in 2004 but it seemed to me that 2005 went a lot smoother online.

I think the off-season rumors thread is a good thing and has been used well (I think back to the "Santino Quaranta on drugs" rumors and just shudder). I think the content and analysis that goes on here has only gotten better in the past year or so.

And one last thing, when I started participating in Big Soccer, I saw constant references to Knave's lack of levity but I actually think you've developed quite a good sense of humor (I know, that probably reads as a damning insult, being as it's coming from someone who is humor-impaired).

In short, Knave and Meridian (and Rev), I want to praise you all for a job well done as moderators and I would have responded earlier but I wanted to see if that check you promised really did arrive in the mail. (Yes it did and I plan to cash it Monday when I find a branch. So far I haven't been able find a branch yet for the bank in Nigeria that this check is cut from. And you say there are millions more in the account I can access if I only give you a deposit of $5,000 of my own money? I'd ask you to tell me more but I guess I'd be hijacking the thread).

I lurked on these boards for 6 or so months before joining. I can truthfully say that it was the DC boards that made me join and keep me coming back (although as some know, I love Politics). After joining I began to visit more forums and realized that this forum is truly a great one. That is thanks in no small part to the efforts of Knave, Meridian, and Rev (RIP). Keep it up guys.

If you get rid of the feckin' Dall-ass trolls in Dema's thread, I'll give you an A. ;)

Being in charge, not getting paid for your work, having to put up with numbnuts-yeah, I can sort of sympathize with that. ;)

Thanks for taking the task on.

So did you guys really kick him out so his Jack-Boots wouldn't bring down your score, or was he scared to see what we all really think? ;) :D

You all do a great job in my opinion, especially considering the compensation you get for it :)

Keep it up.

Does this board have a temperment of inclusivity? Yes.

Does this board enhance the experience of being a United fan? Yes.

Does this board help further United's community outreach? Yes.

Is this board's presence, both locally and globally, nearly as broad as the team's? Um, largely yes.

Do the mods shut down ad hominem, baseless, and/or heinous threads and posts? Yes. (The big words provided as a send-off to relevation.)

Can the mods write well? Yes.

That adds up to an "A".

Please ban the trolls from F*C* You Dallas so my grade of an A is justified.

I gave you blokes an "A" anyone who can keep our boards as clean, and productive as you three (RIP Rev) deserve an A. That said, I thought the grade scale, was A, B, C, D, and F?!?!?

Dave Brother........DC United Moderator. Kinda has a nice ring to it.:D
Did Vicky help you spell this? :D

Overall I'd say that the DC forum has got to be one of the more difficult forums to moderate due to the sheer number of fans both pro and con DC United. We probably attract more trolls than any other forum. Overall, trolls don't really bother me, I think it adds a little fuel to the fire. Only when posts get racist or homophobic should the mods step in, or when attacks get personal and ugly ala Mike Segroves. Other than that I don't think we need to cry MODS! everytime some stupe from Dallas comes here and shoots off his mouth. Let us rip him a new one. :D

For time, effort and overall outstanding moderation you guys get an A in my book. Whoever takes over the Rev's spot has some mighty big jackboots to fill.

The Mods here deserve an A, no question. This is one of the very best boards on this site because of them keeping everything working smoothly.

thanks ya'll. the hard work is very much appreciated.

even though we may give knave hell from time to time for his ocd, we do have the tidiest, best-moderated board on bigsoccer.

and i do believe that i'll second joew's statement about the board being smoother this season.

thanks meridian, rev, and knave.

I don't post much, but I'm in here reading just about every day, and I think the moderators do a great job.

I'm no internet board guru (big soccer is the only one I visit) but I have to say visiting Big Soccer in general and the DC Forum in particular is now part of my daily routine. It is the best source for my soccer fix that I know of and I thank Knave, Meridian and Rev for cutting out all the B.S. (pun intended) so I only have the good stuff to sift through.

I wanted to quote so many of the previous replies but I couldn't quote them all, so in the end I didn't quote any of them. I agree vehemently with just about every poster ahead of me.

It can't be overstated how much we all appreciate the tireless work of our mods, whose effort too often goes thankless. Maybe it's because one of our mods just quit that we're all so sappy, but hey, we love you guys!

Finally, if I can op-ed a bit here: I think part of the success of the DC boards is that our moderators are activist - they form an opinion as to what's right and what's wrong, they act accordingly, and they don't back down and don't take shlt from anyone about it. My sense is, more Bigsoccer boards break down from mods that are too weak than break down from those that are too aggressive (at least the ones that I frequent do).

Oh and as an incident-specific thank you, ITN is no longer with us, and for that I am thankful. Whoever recommended that to the SuperMods should check over at the Politics forum where Coach_McGuirk is mistakenly getting your kudos.
