Bozilla gets the call.

Hey.....scored against Chelsea.

Went from undrafted to the new Ryan Nelsen (and then the bench).

What are his chances?

OK. I'll toss it out there.

When he sees playing time in the friendlies, scores off a corner, he will then be officially on the bubble. From there, I think this underdog with size and scoring ability will once again step up his game and provide some cover in the back in Germany. Sorry Pope. Your days at the WC are done.

You heard it hear first.

Petr Cech must not be happy about this news ;)

For Boswell to replace Pope he would have to be playing so far out of his ass it is not even funny. How could Arena justify not taking a experienced World Cup Vet for...Bobby Boswell? Also, do not forget about the long list of cb in Europe at present.

Why Boswell over Parkhurst? (And I'm a DCU fan...) I've been avoiding the "Bruce Arena loves DCU players" angle, so perhaps it's size. Parkhurst is listed at 5'10", 155 lbs; Boswell goes 6'2", 185 lbs. Bruce seems to be looking for big guys in the center (Pope, Gooch, Gibbs, Berthaler). Does this keep Parkhurst off the team in the future? Can Parkhurst play outside?

Congrats Bobby!

I suspect Boswell's selection is more about who fits into Arena's practice plans better, rather than anything else.

Arena lives in the DC area and his kid was on the team. He went to many of their games as well as many practices. He was even at their camp in Florida last year. Maybe he is a little biased towards DC players because he sees so much of them and likes what he sees.

i think this is it ... he was available, he was an extra body for practice on short notice.
I wouldn't read much more into it beyond that.

OK...I would think that Arena would have called him in the original group if he had even a remote chance of making the team. He is just practice fodder for this training camp. Still it is a good step for him for the next WC cycle.

If I'm not mistaken, Mastroeni was playing as a back in one of the full games; this adds to the idea that BA needs another fullback for practices (since Zavagnin is not going to be lining up there).

He is a practice dummy now, but getting experience for 2010.
Simple as that.

Are there defenders in MLS with WC experience who are not in camp right now? Marshall was a center back, so Arena is clearly wanting to bring another center back in. Other than Parkhurst, who else is out there that is available? I can't think of anyone offhand, maybe Boswell was called in because the ranks of pro center backs are thinned out at the moment. Seriously, I would put his chances of making the team up there with Adu's, especially with the European depth that we have at the center (Bocanegra, Berhalter, Gooch, Gibbs). But Boswell is the kind of guy who has shown really well for a rookie and if given a taste of his possible future, he can develop a lot further, kind of like why Tino, Adu, Rolfe, and others are there- not to make the team in '06, but to motivate them to work hard and develop for '10.

boswell is just tarining camp fodder...

his chances to make the squad depend on the usa jet bound for europe going down...

marshall will get his shot again against guatemala...

and looking at center back...

onyewu
gibbs
bocanegra
berhalter
pope
conrad
marshall

are all ahead of him...

maybe arena is getting boswell some bucks , whatever the per diem is...

boswell can't be making much at dc, and a few extra hundred or so or whatever the per diem is appreciated by boswell

Vanney was a left back, wasn't he? I think he is playing center for Dallas, but that is (I thought) because he doesn't have the closing speed to control a flank anymore.
You are right, though, he is one. I'd take Boswell over him, though, I didn't think he had such a great year this past year and Bozilla did. Plus, Boswell said he would be hitting the weights in the offseason, so maybe he is bulking up and even stronger now. Lotta upside to the future national team vision for Boswell.

A small tidbit here (http://www.soccernewengland.com/articles/view_article.php?id=888), which says that Parkhurst was asked in first, but declined at the urging of Nicol, and Boswell was asked instead.
