View Full Version : Reactions To Davis/Mendes/Pamarot Departures

Personally I think there is no loss. With Jenas, Carrick, Davids being competent central midfielders, with Brown being cover, I think Mendes and Davis were surplus to requirements. I would maybe think that one more midfielder will be brought in now, most likely to be a left winger.
As for Pamarot, no shock but leaves us with lack of cover at right back. Obviously there's Kelly but he has reportedly handed in a transfer request because of lack of first team football (blessing after his shocker vs Leicester). There is always Ifil, but again I wouldnt be suprised with another full back coming into the team.
The best news of all though? The price Pompey paid for the 3. Its reported to be between £7m and £7.5m which I think is a good deal for us. Im not sure of the value the three players were signed for but I'm guessing it was less than £7.5m

A great deal for spurs, now we just have to get the lifeless carcass that is Rasiak outta the club. Oh and Jackson and Bunjy too. Did we tell 'Arry they were also available?
Anyway, Pamarot and Davis are gonna spend their Pompey careers on the treatment table but Mendes will be a good signing for them.
Still, we need the money if we're gonna get Bridge, Walcott or whoever. And the wage bill's gonna look a lot healthier now. If spurs were still listed i think you'd see a big increase in price on this news.
Now we just need a left back, left winger (Bridge can play both positions) and a big man up front. I imagine we'll get Bridge and a forward.

Hopefully this will lead to the first arrival. Very good deal for 3 players we didnt need, got them off the wage bill and got our money back.

Considering that we bought them for £6m (£3m for Davis, £2m for Mendes and £1m for Paramot) it was a fantastic deal.
Of course, I would have loved to see them stay - especially Mendes and Davis. But the reality is that we had too many midfielders and they were never going to get a look into the first team without injuries to either Carrick, Jenas or Davids. Plus, like someone said - Davis and Paramot spend most of their time on the treatment table anyway.
I would maybe have kept Paramot as cover for Stalteri, but for that price, we can pick ourselves up an upgrade.
All in all, a good bit of business and I wish all three of them good luck! I especially hope that Mendes can get his international career back on track (although I hope England doesn't meet him in Germany - as I'm sure he'll pull a Postiga).

Good deal, all 3 were not playing, Pamarot was probably closer to the first team than any of them as he was a defender.
By the way Jol was speaking before the start of the deadline we did have money to spend now their is a extra £7m on top.

I imagine we have at least £10-15m to spend and that may grow slightly if we offload Rasiak and/or Brown. I don't think Jol will spend the lot unless he thinks it'll make CL almost definite. He's done well with free transfers recently (Tainio and Davids) and knows he can pick up quality frees in the summer when contracts run out.
I think we're at a bit of a crossroads. Do we spend big (£10-15m) now in the hope of getting it back in the CL or UEFA cup at least next year? Or do we spend a little less (£3-10m) and fill in the gaps in the summer? I guess it will depend on the quality and price of who's actually available.
We're defo looking at Corradi as a possible loan. I think a loan deal for a spare big man up front is a good idea as Mido's always gonna be No.1 for that spot so no point spending £7m on Iaqunita just for him to warm the bench when Mido's back.
At left back, the only seriously interesting option appears to be Wayne Bridge who's a fantastic player

redknapp said we could throw in rasiak, but that it would reduce his offer to 5.5m.

6 years ago Davis and Mendes would've been Spurs legends. As it is, our Mid is just too crowded.
Those 2 are just too good to sit on the sidelines. And Pamarot was okay. Better than Gardner anyway.

3 very good players but wasted at our club. I have to say I'm glad for Mendes as I like him a lot so it'll be good to see him get some regular first team football. He's going to look like legend compared to the rest of their squad. A central midfield partnership of Davis and Mendes should turn out well.

I was kinda hoping we could get Taylor from them. Oh well.

Great news!
Good bit of business too.
We bought the following players for approximately;
Sean Davis £2.4 million
Pedro Mendes £1.4 million
Noe Pamarot £1.6 million
Total approx £5.4 million
Nice bit of profit in the kitty.

I forgot to mention that the best bit of news out of the 3 leaving is that Michael Brown will 99.999% be staying with us!
Horray!

I read Pamarot cost us £175,000 (and that does ring a bell now that I think about it).

I agree with most comments made here. It was great business and I wish everyone well at Portsmouth. Mendes and Davis were not only very good for Spurs while here, but good professionals when they weren't playing. Both have a lot of talent. I also hope Pamarot finds his way under Redknapp.

Pamarot was 1.75 million.
I agree with Jumhed, Davis and Mendes would have easily been our best centre mid pairing of the last 5 years and that shows just how far we have come.
Great to get some money and trim our obviously far-too-big squad (Wages and unhappy players). Pamarot showed promise in CD but we have Naybet and Davenport as good cover there. Pomepey just improved greatly if the play Sean and Pedro in the middle, and Noe in the centre of defense.
Good deal for both clubs, probably will save Pompey's premiership status.
All we have to do now is invest in a pure quality left sided winger and a good target man and cover for our fullbacks (unless the gaffer thinks we need a better player starting than Stalti, and Stalti is moved to backup).
Sell Gardner, Kelly and Raziak!

Yeah, a definite case of win-win for both sides.
Another fullback would be nice, but I don't really think Lee/Stalteri have been a big problem. They're not great, but they're been somewhat serviceable. Maybe spend a small amount on backup, but no need to splurge on a guy like Bridge (who would imo cost more than just 6M).
I'm also somewhat satisfied with the forward situation, I think Keane/Defoe should be given another shot while Mido's away. A fourth striker is probably not a bad idea I guess, but again no need to splurge.
So that basically leaves a left winger which is the one area we could spend a bit on and actually improve a lot for.

Yep -- win win deal, I like it. Wish the players luck -- a strengthened Pompey side are a good thing -- we don't play them again and can clip some of the wings of our competitors for Europe they'll be playing instead. And we make some cash.

Someone made a comment on another thread about having Lee as a right-attacking-fullback. Good point. He was on the right anyway.
I would love us to bring Bridge in so as to sure up our left hand side.
Please can someone grant me the wish of swapping Fatty for Pedersen?

Thats what i would like to see, Lee as right back and Bridge as left back. Lee-Dawson-King-Bridge looks good to me :)

I heard Lee may be moved to left mid. I hope he could make the switch to right back, I don't see why not seeing as its his stronger foot.
