FOX could sure use AI help right now. The only reason why they're not lower than 4th place is because House is such a huge hit for them.

I'm sure that today's return of 24 helped FOX as well.

This should be a pretty good ratings week for them.

I have a feeling it'll get around 16 million for the opener. That would be great for them considering they were up against ABC's dominant line-up. 24 is always reliable and usually gets 10-12 million a week. :D

For most of last season, I watched the HD airings of American Idol on a non-HD TV (connected to a Comcast HD-DVR via S-cable). However, today was the first time I ever saw the show on a true HDTV (http://www.bigsoccer.com/forum/showthread.php?t=280238). It makes a huge difference!

Anyway, the season started today with auditions in Chicago. It included the usual cast of good singers, bad singers who truly think they're good, and the exhibitionists who know they're not but simply wanted to appear on TV. Moreso than in seasons past, though, the camera also caught what the judges had to say after each contestant stepped out.

Two of the funniest moments were:

After a contestant whose day job is leading cows into cow-judging competitions was turned down with a snarky remark from Simon, Randy told her to name one of the cows "Simon", to which Paula deadpanned "Name him Mad Cowell".

The genuine WTF look on Simon's face toward Paula and Randy (but mostly at Paula) when they both voted "yes" for Crazy Dave near the end of the episode.

The season continues tomorrow (Wednesday, 1/18/06)...

It also broke FOX's record for highest rated season opener with 35.4 million. Other than the Rose Bowl (which had 35.6 million viewers), last night's opener was the highest rated show on network television this season.

And she looked great singing it, particularly in HD. http://home.pacbell.net/torvic1/heartface.gif

I wonder if Simon will get his revenge on him in the next round. :D

Imagine how big the ratings will be for the season finale.

Rough two days for the judges in Greensboro, North Carolina, though Simon seemed to be in a better mood than usual (probably because the second day there was his birthday). Only nine contestants total advanced to the next round - probably not what was expected from the land of Clay Aiken and Fantasia Barrino.

One of the funniest moments happened after a contestant Simon claimed looked like a guest on an episode of Jerry Springer left the room: he briefly imitated one of one of those guests.

An Englishman imitating a Southern accent was humorously bizarre. :D

Tomorrow's stop: San Francisco.

Only nine from the second day advanced, I believe 18 or so advanced from the first day.

I loved when Simon asked someone who was really bad if he had any training. The guy replied by saying that he had Paula Abdul's DVD in his bag.
