Good for SuperBoz.

He was called in (http://www.ussoccer.com/news/fullstory.sps?iNewsid=293937) with Kerry Zavagnin as replacements for Mastroeni.

OK, I retract my earlier reason for Bozilla smiling in the other Boz thread.

Good for Bobby!

I hope Reis and Hanneman remember to call him off :)

so did Boz cuss out Bruce on the phone thinking it was a crank call?

Wonder if he had one of those 'holy schnikes' moments

From the USSoccer story: ..Boswell is also the fourth D.C. United player called in to join Freddy Adu, Brian Carroll and Ben Olsen. And I guess Quaranta is chopped liver? I count 5 DC United players, not 4.

D.C. United’s Bobby Boswell called into National Team camp

Washington, D.C. (January 11, 2006) - U.S. Men’s National Team head coach Bruce Arena has called D.C. United defender Bobby Boswell into the team’s January World Cup training camp. Boswell will join United teammates Freddy Adu, Brian Carroll, Ben Olsen and Santino Quaranta in Carson, Calif. later today. The camp began Jan. 4 at the Home Depot Center and the group will participate in a series of friendlies scheduled throughout January and February.

“This is a great opportunity for Bobby that is well deserved,” said United Technical Director Dave Kasper. “We wish him the best of luck.”

The call-up is the first for Boswell, who enjoyed a very successful rookie campaign for the Black-and-Red in 2005. Despite going undrafted following an impressive four years at Florida International, the defender joined United during pre-season and made an immediate impression on the coaching staff. On April 2, when D.C. opened the regular season, Boswell was the starting center back, filling the void left by MLS Best XI defender Ryan Nelsen. Boswell started 26 of the 27 games he saw time in during 2005, and notched an impressive three goals, including two game-winners, and one assist, also a game-winner. His first career MLS goal clinched a victory in the waning minutes of the club’s 4-3 triumph over the visiting Chicago Fire on June 15.

The U.S. will open 2006 action against Canada on Jan. 22 in San Diego, Calif. (8 p.m. ET), then host Norway on Jan. 29 at The Home Depot Center (5 p.m. ET, ESPN2). The U.S. will play Japan for only the second time in history when they meet at SBC Park on Feb. 10 in San Francisco, Cal. The USA’s first match in the city in 26 years kicks off at 11 p.m. ET and will be broadcast live on ESPN2. The Americans will complete their early season schedule with a friendly against Guatamala in Dallas, Tex. On Feb. 19 (4 p.m. ET, ESPN2).

The USA was drawn into Group E for the 2006 FIFA World Cup along with the Czech Republic, Ghana, and Italy. The U.S. plays their opening match against the Czechs on June 12 in Gelsenkirchen at 12 p.m. ET. Five days later, the USA faces Italy in Kaiserslautern, and then finishes off group play against Ghana on June 22 in Nuremberg. The U.S. has chosen the northern port city of Hamburg as their base of operations throughout the tournament.

5 for United now ties us with LAG and the Revs! I think this says a lot about the strength of our roster. Congrats Bobby, hope you get a cap in one of these friendlies.

GREAT NEWS!Well deserved. Boswell has the potential to be a great defender (his look alone can frighten opponents). I hope he learns a lot in this camp and puts it to use in the future.

This begins to answer what DC's back line might look like next year.

I'm kind of surprised. The pressure is on Brandon Prideaux it would seem.

Is this Bruce trying to help Boz get a Work Permit? ;)

Um, is the Jan 22nd match televised, the paragraph above leaves that to question.......

I guess the Bruce is helping Bozilla avoid a sophomore slump. Marshall's injury must have created a need ....

... either that or they figured that since Goose retired it would be unlucky not to have a prolific own-goal scorer on the side!

Right, Vladsta?

It's a great opportunity for the Boss, but I'm curious about the reasons behind it. Mastro is out and presumably Zavagnin is his replacement. The only defender with a serious knock I'm aware of is Albright, who plays wide right (or left, on occasion). I don't think Bobby has ever played out wide, so perhaps Bruce is covering for Albright by moving one of his central defenders outside. Who might that be? Certainly not Pope.

Yes! :D

Chad Marshall is also hurt--yes? And Califf might have gotten a callup but wasn't available. Boswell adds a lot of aerial ability to the team which also affects how you practice (for instance, what the offense has to go against, or how GK's practice on corners).

And even if Boswell isn't in plans before the end of the WC, this is a great callup for him.

Awesome. Bozilla's back! :D

Edit: ...and unbelievable. Remember where this guy was about 1 - 2 years ago? Good for him.

Or maybe it says he was around, available and bored out of his skull with the off-season. I don't read too much into it. If you look at the list of defenders in camp and who else was out there, maybe Parkhurst is the other one you might call in as a replacement. Maybe he was out of the country or nursing an injury. It's great that Boswell in on the radar, I just don't think it means much.

Well we're allowed to read a whole bunch into it just for fun...

I think JoeW was right. They like his heading ability and he's there to be the McBride body double, as they work offensively and defensively on set pieces. Perhaps some people are predicting some low-scoring close games this summer, games that might be decided by a corner or free kick...

Congrats to Boz! That's got to be a real confidence booster for him and it's certainly as well "earned" a call-up as some of the past winter camps (Orlando Perez, etc.).

Hope he's been keeping fit!
