Ace combat 4 is the one that comes to mind. It's true the Castlevania games have good BGMs.

Gran Turismo of course, even if they're not original musics. At least in Europe. it's a bit the same concerning the tune selection of GTA (Vice City/San Andreas).

A lot of Core/TurboGraphx had catchy themes, mainly for shoot-them-ups.

And what about the very cinematic BGMs of FPSs like Medal Of Honor or Call of Duty ? Maybe Metal Gear Solid also ?

As I write about it, I remember Formula One ('95) on the PSOne, well, if you like Joe Satriani's guitar sound. Anyway, there were good original musics.

Gotta say Halo (the first one). First time my friends and I turned on the XBox and heard the Gregorian chanting, we were like "ooh...". Plus the game was great for picking great battle-march-like songs when the combat was about to pick up (if anyone can find it, I believe my two favorites were "Covenant Dance" and "Rock Anthem for Saving the World" - my friend bought the soundtrack).

Although who can argue with Super Mario Bros.? #2 also had a catchy little ditty. And I loved how SMB3's "underground" levels were a funky version of the underground ones from the first game.

And of course, Tetris. That is a great theme.

Nowadays, I've noticed that a lot of games (namely sports/racing ones) have been using actual songs on their soundtracks, which is nice, but it was fun to listen to the themes from the old games - maybe it's just a nostalgia thing. To be fair, though, there are a few good ones here and there on the newer systems. I particularly like the Fuzion Frenzy soundtrack (xbox), and most of the Final Fantasy ones (esp. VII and X).

If you like old school video game music check out "Duracell".

Very cool, geeky, hard rocking stuff, all based on old SEGA games.

As you speak about SEGA, it reminds me of some musical themes.

Sonic the Hedgehog, of course and particularly Sonic CD which had amazing soundtrack.

How can I forget about the Shinobi episode named 'Shadow Dancer' on the MegaDrive/Genesis ! I also remember about 'Streets of Rage' with the level boss' musics notably.

Gran Turismo of course

I have actually posted about this game's (GT3) music in a bassplayer's forum thread. Still not sure if most of the "bass" is real bass or keyboard, tho. Great tunes either way.

Other games with music I like:

Perfect Dark

FIFA 2000 and 2001- I liked "Joy", "I Can Fly", "Brisco" (I think that's what it's called), and "It's Only Us", plus a couple more, but I don't have either game anymore, and can't remember which tunes go with which games.

Bill Brown (http://billbrownmusic.com/) and Jeremy Soule (http://www.jeremysoule.com/) are among two of the best game composers around.
