View Full Version : Question about final table standings

Can anyone tell me if there is any benefit to finishing second or third in the table rather than fourth? Obviously, the top four qualify for the Champions League, and also (although not that very many people care), coming in second gets you a date with Chelsea for the rather meaningless Community Shield match, but is there any other "bonus" for finishing second or third? Like, does the club get more money from the EPL, or get some sort of easier path in the CL? Sorry if it's a dumb question, but I really don't know. As a fan, of course, I'd like to see them finish high in the table, but I want to know what the club's motivation is, if any.

3rd and 4th have to play a two-way fixture to get into the CL round robin stage in the next Fall. 1st and 2nd go right in. You don't get into the Charity Shield, as that is League Winners versus FA Cup winners. You'd only get in if those were one and the same. There are financial bonuses to clubs at the end of the season based on where they finished, but it is not massive money and the relative differences are not that large. I've no idea what the amounts are.

You lot have no idea the turmoil I go through. No friggin' joke. I literally can't sleep even one wink the night prior, and my fiancee thinks I'm making a big deal over nothing. What does she know? :) There is no result that pleases me, but it seems like draws are pretty common lately. I guess the good news is that winning the Premiership would be a stretch for either team, so I just want to see both qualify for Europe. Deep down I secretly do want one team to win, but I'll never tell anyone which one...

I realized it right after I posted it about the Community Shield - I guess that just shows how unimportant I think it is :o
Thanks for the info on the CL and the bonuses

Besides the aforemention bonuses, there is a little something called pride. Seeing Liverpool above Man United will put a smile on my face for the entire off-season.

I asked because I have two teams, but they are in way different leagues. But I have them in order. Liverpool is my team unless they face DC United. Not likely to happen though.

Although I am in Carson (California) 60 hours per week, five minutes from the Home Depot Center, I also support DCU. Maybe it's because I played in a band in Virginia in 1988 called DCU, I don't know.
I hope that match does materialize someday just so you can share my anguish.

Only if you don't follow the game in England and only if your team has never played for it. These are just the matches played in Cardiff in the 97 year history.
The last 5 years have seen some fantastic football played (and some great fights)
2001 Liverpool Manchester United 2-1
2002 Arsenal Liverpool 1-0
2003 Manchester United Arsenal 1-1**
2004 Arsenal Manchester United 3-1
2005 Chelsea Arsenal 2-1
Try and tell a Liverpool supporter who went the see the Scum get beaten in 2001 or an Arse fan after beating them 3-2 that it's "Unimportant"
Some other silly person claimed that the FA Cup was "Unimportant" but did you see any of those unimportant matched last weekend?
Now if I said that the MLS was "Unimportant" (and it is to me and most of the football world) there'd be a fatwa issued in my name....:)

You are entitled to your opinion -- its not a matter of religious orthodoxy.:D
It is my team, in my long time (34 years) place of residence. I get to see 20 plus games a year from the first row. I get to STAND (hear that all you Brits) and sing for 90 plus minutes every other Saturday. It is not bad football. Ask Chelski, or the four or so other English teams (Leeds, Notts Forest, Spurs, and the Cartoon Army all of whom left either drawn or defeated) who thought they's get a quiet run out against us.
But like I said you are entitled to your opinion:D

If there was an MLS team within reasonable distance from me, (Go Sounders!)I know I could fill my van for the home games and we'd all become rabid supporters, call DC fans names and have all the fun of singing, living and dying with the team.
I'd think my team was the best in the world when a team comes over for a holiday game after a hard 60 match season and tosses us a bone. (re: tired)Arf!
But there isn't, so the point I was trying to make was...... Don't call something "unimportant", when you don't even know who gets to play in it. When it is important to millions of affectionadoes.
(No, not you, the guy who called it unimportant!)...:D

well, thats not the only benefit the club would get if they finished 2nd in the EPL.Naturaly,in the C.L ,not all the clubs get payed the same amount.I mean, uefa pay the teams depending on there results, but thats not where the real money comes from. The real cash comes from TV and sponsorship deals.Well, logicaly the best clubs of the country will be 1-2,so they naturaly get much better payed than the 3-4 placed teams. If im not mistaken,its-
Of the total money available from these deals*im not to certain the % of 1st and 2nd,but im sure the 3-4 th get 15%.
1st............40%
2nd...........30%
3rd............15%
4th............15%

No, it's not bad at all. I'm also lucky enough to live within regular driving distance of an MLS team, FC Dallas. While they're nowhere near the caliber of the mighty LFC, we've got two ex-Premiership players (Ronnie O'Brien and Mark Wilson) and one of the top players on the U.S. national team, Eddie Johnson.
My favorite moment of the FC Dallas season: getting a front row seat at Pizza Hut Park, so I could heap 90 minutes of abuse on Landon Donovan as FCD destroyed the LA Galaxy!

I can't comment on someone saying that the FA Cup was unimportant, and I don't agree, but when I said the Community Shield was unimportant, I didn't mean to imply that the possibility of good football was precluded. Hell, my mates and I play good football at a little rink down the street and the winner gets nothing. All I meant was that the prize itself was probably the least important piece of hardware in top English football. Others may disagree, and often do, but that's my take anyway.

Thank you for this information. Now if I just keep reading things like this for three hours a day for two years, I might finally be able to communicate intelligently on English football ;)

Nice, I used to be a Burn season ticket holder before moving to California. I finally got to visit the park in August...very nice place and it had a good crowd.
