Bltleo, we're fans of Rick Steves, who writes travel guides for all over Europe, and has weekly television shows. ( www.ricksteves.com ) He's very much the typical American "dad", very amusing. He likes to get "off the beaten path" and experience the local culture. It's a good way to save money, too!
Hm "american dad"?..I will look at this web-site....looks like the american dad write interesting stories....

Thanks for all the great info bltleo!! Lot's of very helpful information. Two quick questions: I'm heading to Dortmund for the Swe v Tnt game and also going to Belch-n-Burpin' to see the USA beat Czech Rep. I have a car for the week. Do you recommend driving to the stadiums? If not, can you give your opinion of the best transportation options from Cologne to the games?
Thanks again for the information you have provided to this thread!!

only few weeks before the world cup..
I see many of you are going to spend few days in Cologne..
well mostly of you at different dates..
I suggest that we could set some dates for meetings in Cologne..
maybe in Cologne pub, called Pfäffgen, my favorite pub in Cologne,
it is big pub and they have own brewery so the beer taste very good.
It is typical pub in Cologne, they have also screen for games. The atmosphere in pub is typical Kölsch - Cologne. This kind of pub you will not find anywhere in the world only in Cologne. So maybe we can meet there:
http://www.paeffgen-koelsch.de/
I will advice you how to find the pub. Just have a look and let me know if you would like this pub.
Another good and typical pub near train station is
Früh AM DOM
http://www.koeln.de/branchenfuehrer/pages/front/eintrag.php/28982/Brauhaus-Frueh-am-Dom-Koeln.html
here is also good web-site about pubs in Cologne with information how to find päffgen or other pubs in Cologne.

bltleo.....do those pubs allow kids? We've got 2 younger boys, 11 and 15. How family friendly are they?

you know you will not be able to order beer or drink beer. But you can order cola or some non-alcohol drink. I hope you both are going there with your parents. If your parents go with, it is o.k, they will care of you. But you both CAN NOT GO alone there. You should not drink alcohol! In Germany you can drink alcohol if you are older than 18. I know in the USA you must be at least 21. But go with your parents and it will be o.k and don´t drink alcohol. You are too young for this. I bet you both are not comming alone to Germany:). DRKBOYS, but maybe I can recommend you some good place not a pub where you can have a fun. So only with your families boys, o.k?

The train (rail) route from Mainz to Cologne is one of the most beautiful in Germany.
I absolutely agree. I regularly travel from Bonn to Schaffhausen and between Bonn and Mainz I mostly stare out of the window, because it's so nice. :)
Actually, I took a few pictures last time:

Actually I think dkrboys was saying they are bringing their 2 young boys, not that they themselves are young boys.

Funny, I misunderstood the post:). Maybe I was confused with the name"drkboys".:). My English is horrible. I´m ashamed.
Well if dkrboys are not boys but parents they are bringing two boys, then both pubs are family-friendly. It is o.k to take both kids with.

Have to correct you there. ;)
In Germany, you can buy beer and (sparkling) wine at 16. You have to be 18 though to buy spirits, etc..

yes you are right, I mispelled it... beer up 16...but spirits and hard alcohol since 18..well it does not matter the two boys are 11 and 15..so they can not drink beer either:)
