yeah, I hope he would be proud of me:).....my big idol:)

For me it is great to live in Cologe - zero cost and big benefit from the World Cup, enjoying atmosphere in the city, meeting fans and watching game.
For example England-Sweden in Cologne. Now many of Americans are jealous since I don´t need book any room and get all the advantages:). This is benefit a la Adam Smith.

we are flying into Cologne and staying in the Rhine area for 3 days, then moving to another town for 3 and then 2 nights in Munich.

After that we are leaving Germany to go to either:

Venice and Florence OR

we will catch the train & REALLY party in Pamplona on July 5th for Running of the Bulls and catch the rest of the games in tapas bars.

we did that during France WorldCup and we had even more fun in Pamplona, Spain.

We are spending our (ex) San Jose Earthquakes season tickets money and applying it to Germany instead.

Great schedule: Cologne area, München and Italy. Sound a lot of fun.
If I can recommend you italian city than Florence is my favorite!!!

I got a really nice apartment in Bamberg on the river for ten days for 40 Euro a night. I will use my Hyatt points to stay a couple nights there.

Oh Another thing, I am looking to trade my USA-Ghana tickets for another game(Germany-Costa Rica?). Any takers

Hm....Germany-Costa Rica or USA-Ghana. I don´t have tickets for USA-Ghana. But for the first game I have. Hm....hard choise....I need to think first. Open game Germany-Costa Rica...hm...or US boys?...hm.....will think about this....

I will say that the rates have at least doubled in many cases. Having planned a trip to Germany at exactly the same time last summer, I can see a MAJOR difference.

Gee, the rates on hotels went up during the World Cup..Duh! Yes, if you waited until now to book you are going to find the decent rates gone. In December, I booked 2 rooms at the Hilton in Mainz for <$180 a night. The rates were there, but you had to get them while they were available. So all the hotels have left are expensive rooms - no big mystery there.

You snooze, you lose.

I booked the day after the matches were announced there sporto. But thanks for your story of triumph.

Have fun in Mainz. I'll be right in the middle of the action in Cologne. I wonder which of us was snoozing when it came to deciding where to stay.

Ha! I would say Roadkit was snoozing to be fair, but Mainz isn't bad. Compared to staying at the SAS in Cologne though? Cough:rolleyes:

I am hoping to find an apartment to rent near in Cologne for the entire month of June. I've been checking e-rent.de but does anyone know of any other sources with listings for short term rentals?

well Cologne is better than Mainz.

I lived 2 years in Mainz. It is lovely city, with beautiful Old Town.
But I think Cologne offer more possibilities to go out - better restaraunts, better pubs and bars. Cologne is bigger than Mainz.

But both are very nice city. But if I had choise between Cologne and Mainz, I would choose Cologne of course.

I read a great review of the Hotel Im Wasserturm. Sounded like a cool place - built in an old water tower.
Best price I could get for a double room was $1,623 for one night. Of course at that rate, breakfast was extra ($25 per person.)
Don't look for us there.

Cochem, Trier, Freinsheim - excellent places.
Yes Freinsheim is wine area in Germany.
You should visit so called Germany Wine Road - this is in Rhine-Palatine where you are staying. Mosel is excellent wine area which are are going to visit too.
Great places you have picket out!
From Trier you can be very quickly with train or car in LUXEMBOURG - it is very nice city. You should definitely visit Luxembourg while you are in Trier.

Bltleo, we're fans of Rick Steves, who writes travel guides for all over Europe, and has weekly television shows. ( www.ricksteves.com ) He's very much the typical American "dad", very amusing. He likes to get "off the beaten path" and experience the local culture. It's a good way to save money, too!
