NYC is just an overly-expensive, over-hyped Philly knockoff

Great place to visit, but I'd much rather live in Philly or Boston

I went to Villanova, spent many hours in Philly, now work in NYC. All I can say is, you're nuts ;)

Great call on that. Anybody who has spent enough time in each three of these cities realizes they cannot be compared. Boston has 1M people that can hardly be compared to NYc. Boston does have some great soccer fans and sports fans though. Bottom line is that Boston is a very small place. They have a term for people from Boston, they are called Masshole* for some reason. Have three or four close friends up in Boston, they are not counted as those type of people. I have meet many in Boston that meet the Masshol* definition. As for Philly, I have been there and Manayunk and some surronding areas. Not bad, but let's be serious.

Apples to Oranges. Better?
Depends what you use to rate cities and what you like to do. . The respected Conde Nast Traveler rates SF as the best US city to visit. It has a lot of natural beauty, landmarks, great weather and resturaunts as well as tourist attractions.
http://www.concierge.com/bestof/readerschoice/top_cities/topcities_us

BUT, I would agree that when it comes to sheer number of things to do, diverse neighborhoods, people, foods, and nightlife, it cannot hold a candle to NYC, nor would most any other city in the world.

So enough of US cities, how does Mainz rate for a 4-5 night stay? is there mcuh to do there?

yes Mainz is definitely worth to visit , great city at Rhine...I have attached web-site where you can see what all you can visit in the city..

you can also do boat trip along Rhine River from Mainz via Koblenz to Cologne..

In Koblenz is so called German Corner - where Mosel and Rhine meet together, very romantic place.

It looks like we're staying in Koblenz for the Gelsenkirchen match. Yes, it's a long trip back and forth, but it makes sense for our after-match travel up the Moselle. I'm figuring 2 hours back to Koblenz after the match. On the way in, we'll stop off in Köln for half a day.

I am renting a Holiday Flat in Bamberg for 40 Euro a night. I am using my Hyatt Goldpassport points for 3 nights in the Hyatt in Mainz. You don't need to stay in the eaxct city where the games are. Stay somewhere else and rent a Holiday Flat. Put it this way. I got a nice place to stay a 2 bedroom apartment for the price of 1 or 2 nights in a Hotel.

Germans don't stay in Hotels in Germany. Do you know why? It's too expensive!

Do a google search on Holiday flats in Germany, Good Luck and see you at the games.

Dear JP54.....I would like to know if you are German or on which argument do you say that Germans don´t stay in Hotels in GERMANY!!

I ´m German and I stay only in good hotels.....Germans are travel nation in the world number one.....We spend a lot of money for travelling around the world..and yes, Germans stays in Hotels as well- of course it depends on budget.....young people with not so much money will probably stay in HOstels or apartments.....But Germans like to stay in Hotel.......German hotels are too expansive...well it depends where in which city, where is hotel localated etc.....it is tourismus business

but Germans stay in Hotels.....or do you think that German have no money for hotels?:)

Do Americans stay in hotels?...Yes, they do.....

Chill Out!

What I meant was it is crazy to spend 300 - 400 Euro on a hotel for a night when you can get an apartment for a week for that. Who would spend that a night for 3 weeks? An apartment is much more effiecient. The wife is from Germany by the way. Hotels usually double there rates arount events such as Octoberfest.

I will say that the rates have at least doubled in many cases. Having planned a trip to Germany at exactly the same time last summer, I can see a MAJOR difference.

ex. The hotel I stayed at in Munich last summer was $150 a night. I just checked and for the same time this year it's over $400.

Still this time it's the SAS in Cologne, so...

I think it is really unfair that hotels increased their rates during the world cup. I was schocked when I looked for hotel in Cologne for my friends and saw these horrible prizes. You usually can get in Cologne good hotel prize 100 Euro. But they increased the prize so much. In all hosting cities- München, Cologne, BErlin etc. I think it is not fair to soccer fans. But maybe demand for rooms is so high and it is current "market prize" in June. It is just business, demand and supply stuff:)

SAS in Cologne...how much do you pay?....

I know you stay in Cologne. I remember this:)

I go every day along SAS Hotel along.

o.k...i chilled out:).....

of course prizes of hotels are horrible now. Appartment is better if you like to stay more days or 2 weeks. I agree on this. But for 1 or 2 day is hotel fine as well. It depends:)

I got a really nice apartment in Bamberg on the river for ten days for 40 Euro a night. I will use my Hyatt points to stay a couple nights there.

Oh Another thing, I am looking to trade my USA-Ghana tickets for another game(Germany-Costa Rica?). Any takers

we are flying into Cologne and staying in the Rhine area for 3 days, then moving to another town for 3 and then 2 nights in Munich.

After that we are leaving Germany to go to either:

Venice and Florence OR

we will catch the train & REALLY party in Pamplona on July 5th for Running of the Bulls and catch the rest of the games in tapas bars.

we did that during France WorldCup and we had even more fun in Pamplona, Spain.

We are spending our (ex) San Jose Earthquakes season tickets money and applying it to Germany instead.
