my friend and i plan on staying in Köln for the first 3-4 days, then heading off to Hamburg before the US-Italy match. we're still trying to figure out when we'll be where.
I am staying in Konigswinter, an incredible little city on the Rhine river. A couple hours from Gelsenkirchen by train, but its a really neat place. Gives you a feel for German countryside. Easy train access to Bonn, Cologne, and Dusseldorf.
Hotel rooms available there still for reasonable prices.
How reasonable? Any suggestions as to where to stay?
We're being quoted at €120/Db and €95/single for matchnight in Köln.

Tickets in trade for places to stay!!! My wife is from Koln and she has had many friends stay with us over the last two years, giving me and anyone else plenty of places to stay for WC'06. Now I do not have tix to any of the games, as yet, but will trade for housing.
Let me know...

bltleo,
For a five night stay and for the Kaiserslauten match, is there enough to do in Mainz? I have the dates of the 14th through the 19th to fill.
How is the scene there? I like the idea of staying maybe at a flat in the country/winery, but also want to be able to enjoy nightlife close by and enjoying the World Cup festivities( i will be in the host cities for the other group matches, so I though a little R&R might be welcome) . Any other areas you would reccomend over this plan?

btleo,
We are staying near the train in Cologne for the first few days we are in Germany. I would like to know what you would suggest for travelling to and from the dussedorf airport into Cologne. Is there an easy rail connection from the airport? Also, how will train travel be to and from the stadium in Gelsenkirchen? Thanks.

btleo, this thread is getting long enough as it is. perhaps as the tournament draws closer, you could start a new thread dedicated to the Cologne-Dusseldorf-Rhein area, as far as tips on good places to go, etc.

Ive been told by someone familiar, you have to take a shuttle bus from the airport to the Train Station outside of Dusseldorf. Take the train into Dusseldorf, then get a train to Cologne. Mirka or any others correct me if I am wrong.

From Düsseldorf airport into Cologne you have excellent train connection. I often fly from Düsseldorf and when I travel back to Cologne I take only train.
You can take regional or speed train or simply S-Bahn (something like subway but a bit more speed). From Düsseldorf to Cologne you need with train ca. 30 minutes, with extra speed train maybe 15-20 minutes.
The same for Gelsenkirchen. From Düsseldorf to Gelsenkirchen you can use train. I´m sure during World Cup they will travel much more trains to Gelsenkirchen.
Using train is the best.

NYC is the best. I cannot argue that. Born just outside it and have resided in it for 8 years. Not sure what the saxaphones means. I could take a guess. But why bother.

It's a reference to a once popular song by the band Fear.
