Current reservation is two nights in a hotel in Cologne, June 11 and 12. However, we may switch that to Muenster.

I have reservations at the Gasthaus Krone. Is it that far outside Cologne? Should I change it to a different location? The price is pretty cheap so I jumped on it. June 11 - June 28th.

Hotel: Gasthaus Krone
Address: St. Tonnis-Str. 12

I'm staying at my brothers friend's place in Frechen 10 mins outside of Cologne.

ach, Frechen. They have very good disco there. There are many shops and
industrial park. And with the subway you can reach city very easy. I think it is good place to stay in Cologne. One of my friend live in Frechen and he is happy there.

Zülpicher Strasse area is actually the area close to Cologne University and there are many students pubs and restaraunts. It is quiet central. From there you can go to Rudolfplatz or Hohenzollernring - which is great place with many cool restaraunts. With Subway or by foot you can easy reach city - centre - like Neumark or Altstadt. Zülpich Strasse - I often spend there time
with my friends. I don´t know how old are you. If you are young, you will enjoy this part of Cologne. It is the best for young people. Will you stay in hotel there or by friends?

Have you ever been in Germany or Cologne?

If you need detailed travel plan, let me know.

thanks, Zülpicher Strasse sounds cool. I have never been to Germany before. I am looking at a few hotels around there and Belgisches Viertel, what can you tell me about that?

also it looks like many hotels which are usually around 70€ have raised their rates to 160€, I expected a little price hikes for the cup but more than double is kind of outrageous.

Belgisches Viertel - this is where I often go out for shopping and going out
this is my favorite part of Cologne. As I told you it is very good for going out, the best clubs, restaraunts, shops. It is area around Hohenzollernring. It is typical belgium "Viertel" and this is not far away walking distance to Zülpicher Strasse.
here are some info but in german language only, but you can get first impression here:
http://www.koeln.de/shopping/koeln/belgischesviertel.html

yes I have heard that many hotels increased their rates during the World Cup especially big cities like Cologne. I don´t thind it is o.k.

If I find good hotel below 100K Euro, I let you know.

I've found two places I'm considering, they're relatively cheap. one is on Hohenzollernring, which I think is in the Belgian Quarter? The other is on Im Stavenhof and sounds like it is a 5 minute walk to the train station.

which is a better (ie, more fun, better restaraunts & little pubs) location?

Is it possible to stay in Mainz for a few days and then train or drive down the day of the Kaiserslautern game? How far are these two cities apart from each other?

I'm now considering leaving Dusseldorf a couple days early to set up in Munich before the Italy game...it'd be more expensive (about $40-50 in total) but would make things a lot easier not having to lug all my crap around on gameday (not to mention being able to get to Munich and go straight to the hostel to crash, rather than having to again lug my crap aroud the city all day until I can check in), and the 2 cities are about equidistant from Kaiserslautern. Plus 6 days in Dusseldorf might get to be a bit much. Gonna wait and see how much I end up having to pay for tickets, if I can get my tickets for face value or close to it then and there's still room at the Munich hostel I'll probably go ahead and make the switch.

According to the DB rail schedule, it's about a 1.5 - 2 hour train trip.

Yes it is possible

here is good map and information how to come from Mainz to Kaiserslautern with both train or car (Auto in German):

or English:

but with the car maximal 1 hour .

so you can choise Mainz. I lived in Mainz for 3 years. It is also city at Rhine and area from Cologne to Mainz is really beautiful - Romantic Rhine Road.
And if you are in Mainz, you can easy visit Cologne with train. By the way it is very nice train route. One of the most beautiful in Europa - with all the castles and nice Rhine river.

bltleo,
What do you know about Bödingen. We are looking at renting a house there for the two weeks we are in Germany. All I know is that it is between Cologne and Bonn. Any help you could give me would be greatly appreciated.
