For those of you who don't follow the charts like I do, here's a list of the eight songs that became number one hits on the Billboard Hot 100 in 2005. See Wikipedia (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Number_1_Hits_%28United_States%29) for more on this subject.

Let Me Love You - Mario (9 weeks)
Candy Shop - 50 Cent f/Olivia (9 weeks)
Hollaback Girl - Gwen Stefani (4 weeks)
We Belong Together - Mariah Carey (14 non-consecutive weeks)
Inside Your Heaven - Carrie Underwood (1 week)
Gold Digger - Kanye West f/Jamie Foxx (10 weeks)
Run It! - Chris Brown (5 weeks)
Don't Forget About Us - Mariah Carey (1 week)

Also of interest is the Billboard year end chart, which ranks the songs for the entire calendar year. The top ten overall of 2005:

10. Behind These Hazel Eyes - Kelly Clarkson
9. Don't Cha - **********cat Dolls f/Busta Rhymes
8. Candy Shop - 50 Cent f/Olivia
7. Boulevard Of Broken Dreams - Green Day
6. Gold Digger - Kanye West f/Jamie Foxx
5. 1, 2 Step - Ciara f/Missy Elliot
4. Since U Been Gone - Kelly Clarkson
3. Let Me Love You - Mario
2. Hollaback Girl - Gwen Stefani
1. We Belong Together - Mariah Carey

No surprise at the top here. Just for reference, here's the year end number one songs of the past five years:

2004: Yeah - Usher f/Lil' Jon & Ludacris
2003: In Da Club - 50 Cent
2002: How You Remind Me - Nickelback
2001: Hanging By A Moment - Lifehouse
2000: Breathe - Faith Hill

Just my opinion buddy, appreciate the research you did to post it. I think you'll agree that there was better music out there, thats all.

I'm as big a snob as they come, but I liked Hollaback Girl and Golddigger.

"Since U Been Gone" is exemplary pop music. Just because something is popular doesn't mean that it's lousy.

true, but i know in my experience that if a song is really popular,ie it's on a list like this, that there's about a 95% chance that i think it will suck. a couple of the songs on this list were pretty catchy the first time i heard them. but you get bombarded by this stuff everywhere you go. about the fourth time i heard hollerback girl i thought "god this song is really, really retarded"

I agree and look at things like this. Take those songs and put them in their respective genre. Now consider all of the other artists and tracks that were released in those genres and ask yourself if the original ones are anywhere near the best. For me the answer is clearly no. Most popular, but pretty poor in terms of every other criteria.

I'm as big a snob as they come, but I liked Hollaback Girl and Golddigger.Gold Digger is quality. I didn't like Hollaback Girl, but Rich Girl was my favorite guilty pleasure song of the year.

I thought that about "Hollerback Girl" the first time I heard it. But it's still catchy fun.

Comes down to preference really...I'll admit if there is a mainstream pop song that I like but as mentioned before, the majority will usually be crap...I mean.

Most singles released are made to fit that mainstream quotas, simplistic and not exactly exemplary songwriting.....although there are exceptions and some are indeed very catchy.

I love American Idiot, despite its global mainstream popularity, its a clever record. Some Kanye West songs aren't bad either compared to most other material within that genre.

..Also, don't know if its just me but I still don't see what the hype is about when it comes to Kelly Clarkson and that "Since you've been gone" song...sorry
