ESP knocks me for six. Not really a session bitter. For a regular old piss-up im fond of London Pride, but I do really like Fuller's seasonal ales. Honeydew, Summer Ale, Red Fox and Jack Frost...

Steer clear of Old Mr Harry. is a dirty ale - wasnt keen. Maybe the name conjured up images and influenced me. Old Mr Harry = Dirtly Old Man = Dirty Ale.

Oh and I don't know if you have ever had Young's Waggledance. Damn that stuff ********s me up. Honey ale. Loopy juice more like it :D

I did have a Waggledance while there. Very good. Liked it better than London Pride even which surprised me.

Yeah, well at least you're not 6 months pregnant like my fiancee.
Nice recovery on that one by the way.

I meant to level with you on that when you got back online but totally forgot.I was in no way suggesting that your Fiancee has the figure of a 8.5 month pregnant woman. Gods honest truth I could only her head and sholders when you introduced me and I didn't realise we had two spouses on the trip. Hence my oops.

An honest mistake, and some pretty fast talkin huh :)

You did fine, honestly. She's short and with my uhhhh 'figure?' it isn't surprising you couldn't see her.

Easy mistake to make and we still laugh about it. I tell her she doesn't look anything like she's 8 months...more like 4. Then I get a playful slap from er.

To those tuning in late:

This is NOT some obscure british mating ritual.

I had a bottle of it a couple weeks ago (self-imported), not bad. But I like Fuller's honey beer better. I took a tour of Fuller's back in Sept... I'll do Young's next time.

Heh.. waggledance 5% abv... that cracks me up. There was an english kid at the pub the other day who said his friends called Stella Artois "Loopy Juice" because of it's high abv, which is a whopping 5.2%. (sarcasm) :)

Agreed that fuller's esb is too strong to be a session beer at 5.9%.

For me a session beer should be around 4%. In the U.S., because they're are so many 6%+ microbrews and virtually no beers as low as 4% in ABV except for light lagers most people think of any beer that's 5% or less as a session beer, which is pretty stupid.

I'd hate to see how the english would handle a real Belgian beer like Rochefort 8 (9.2%), or Delerium Tremens (9.0%).

I just saw that the Strokes are touring the UK in Jan-Feb. Most of the shows are sold out, but i might try to get a ticket while i'm over there.

The first album was good, but the second album was crap. Haven't heard the third one yet. What about you anti, have you heard it yet?

I haven't heard the new Strokes album yet, but i loved the second one. I saw them live once too, and it was a really good show.

I love me some Delerium Tremens. Not to mention, La Chouffe, Leffe, Duvel, Lucifer, and of course, Chimay.

Indeed. I notice you go for the belgian pales. I slightly prefer darks, but I love them all.

The A'chouffe brewery is particularly great. Interestingly though I've met several belgians who've never heard of it.. I think it's export ratio is pretty high.

Are you into the Unibroue beers from Quebec?

Fin du Monde is great! Have you had any of the Ommegang(sp) Brewery stuff from Cooperstown, NY?

Yes, La Fin Du Monde is excellent, another pale ;). I love it too, but I think Maudite slightly edges it, and their yearly Terrible's are alway really f'n good. I've got a bar close to me that always has one Unibroue beer on tap, usually Maudite, never La Fin Du Monde (they say they can't get it), but they once had the Ephemere apple, which on tap, was incredible. I want to goto Montreal some time just to tour the brewery.

Ommegang, I've only had a few... from memory I know I've had the Wit, which was okay, and the 'Quadruple', three philsophers I think was the name, which again was okay and really really strong. Duvel owns the brewery right? Either that or they have some distribution agreement, I can't remember which.

Edit: they bought them in 03.

I find that my tastes are changing as I get older. It used be nothing but Guinness, and I still drink that fairly often, but now it's mostly pale ales. I love Victory's Hop Devil, as well as their Golden Monkey. As for Ommegang and Duvel, I think you're right.

I live in Wilmington, DE, which is about 30 minutes from the Victory Brewery in Downington, PA.

I could always send you a bottle or two if I pack them very carefully. :)

heh, I couldn't let you do that until I had something good to trade. I'm going to attempt to brew a strong belgian pale soon though (will take a couple months to ferment), if that comes out well you might have a deal.

I think theres more to it then simple alcohol %'s.

For example I can't drink Fosters in volume for a session. Sure its weak as nats piss but it just bloats me out so much I just dont WANT more than 2-3 pints of the stuff.

Also - especially with bitter - certain beers induce different kinds of stupors for different people it seems. And for me Waggledance is pretty much "falling down water". Im fine on Stella and 1664 though - both of which are stronger.

Also bear in mind that the average bender for the average man in London probably consists of around 8-10 pints. Thats a lot of beer 5% or not. And thats for lightweights like Rick, TopCatCole and myself - do NOT try and out drink Surfcam.

Finally you mention 4% beer. Over Christmas my local started stocking a beer called C2. A 2% lager. Fairly horid taste BUT it does serve a unique purpose. I often find I get to a good level of delerium but the night is still young. However if I contuinue to drink at the same rate I just get violently ill. If I STOP drinking I get the "still awake hangover" and get violently ill. I've found that by switching to this stuff I can mantain my sozzled state without going over the top. Plus you dont notice the taste when your already four sheets to the wind.

I just wish id discovered that in November for Spurs Away. Perhaps then I wouldn't have ended up in Tottenham - half cut - at 1am - on Derby Day.

You homebrew too? My buddy is a major homebrewer, and helped me make my first brew last March. Read all about it here:

http://www.foolcircle.net/brews/brew.php?id=84

I just moved into a house with a basement, so I'm looking to do my own brewing. First one, a "Grolsh" style beer called "Deike" that my roommate Debie is going to help with, thus the name. We're thinking the label will feature an image of a particualry butchy woman on a motorcycle while sticking her finger in a dam.

Interesting idea... you'd never see something like that here. 'too girlie' would be the claims. I like the concept.

If you didn't already know anyone who drinks cider here is usually concidered a girl as well, where there it seems like the preferred method to obtain a real cheap drunk. Another Ace anyone? Ace price! 59p! Here that section of the convenience store (off license) would be full of malt liquor.
