Find a double CD of Beth Carvalho. I got one a couple of years ago at Borders. It has several well-known songs, most of them sambas. Some of the highlights are: "Coisinha do Pai", "Toque de Malicia", "Se voce quiser".
You can also pick up "Samba Enredos" compilations. Every year one is released with the sambas of each Rio de Janeiro "escola" for that year's carnival. You'll notice if you pick up a variety of things, that more recent sambas are faster. The beat has been speeding up every year.
A samba is basically a variation on a march (listen to "Na cadencia do samba" for a good example of even "Toque de malicia"). I'm on vacation right now, but when I'm home next week I'll post the names of a couple of albums I can recommend.
EDIT: This is the double CD (http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00005OC4S/qid=1136489017/sr=1-35/ref=sr_1_35/002-1569631-0316854?s=music&v=glance&n=5174) I'm referring to.
