Given the relatively early time of the match, it looks doable to me to stay in Munich and take the train to Nuremberg for the game. Does that make sense or am I missing something?

Seems to make sense to me... what's accomodation availability like in Munich?

I got tickets in the first FIFA draw for match 37 (which thank the soccer gods is Argentina v. Holland) a day before the US game in Nuremberg. We're planning to attend in Frankfurt then hop an overnight train to Nurenberg and then back to our base in the countryside hopefully on a one-day pass so we don't have to use two days.

I'll be taking the train from Heidelberg in the morning and back to Heidelberg in the evening after the match. Then its off to Frankfurt the next day to catch my departing flight at noon.

If it helps, about four years ago I took a train from Frankfurt to Nuremberg just to go shopping for the day. I also ate some sausages and drank some beers. I think it was an ICE train, although I can't be certain, and although it was a full day it wasn't too bad. Do they even have overnight trains to Nuremberg from Frankfurt? It's only a 2 hour ICE ride.
On a different note: I built a spreadsheet in May that shows the WC cities and a lot of different info. I've not looked at it in a long time. I now see that I did a "mock draw", just for grins, back then. In my mock draw I had Italy as the seed in the E group and USA as the E3 team in that group. Which is exactly what happened. Should have played the lottery that day I suppose.

Last time I checked, there's still rooms left at the Nuremberg Holiday Inn City Center (it's in the red light district too). I hear Nuremberg is actually a really cool/interesting place- despite it's "reputation" problem.

Yes. 1.5 hours tops is the ICE train to Nuremburg.
Here is the train I am looking into:
22-Jun
Train #: ICE 728
From Munich HBF
Departs: 9:10 am
To Nuremberg HBF
Arrives: 10:28am
Total time: 1h 18m

The train doesn't take all night from Frankfurt, I just meant that after the late Aregentina v. Holland game it would be late at night when we caught the last train out, which right now says just after midnight, arriving in N'berg at 3am. Then we plan to catch a few winks in the park before partying for the US game then head back to our base near Idar-Oberstein that same night. PHew.

I'll see you on the train.
My only question is do we go back to Munich for the post game celebration or stay in Nuremberg ?

I'll be in Nuremberg, as I'm scheduled to spend the night of the 22nd in Frankfurt...definitely planning on partying until the wee hours of the morning and checking into my hotel late, however.

I just booked places over the weekend; Game Night in Nuremburg and then a couple nights in Munich after before I bail. There were still plenty of options available in both cities using the site below. My wife will be with me for the second week so we went mid-range and booked at Hotel Steichele in Nuremburg for 125 E. Close to the train station and in the City Center. There were also plenty of cheaper options though...

I have to get back to our base after the N'berg game, but if we are moving through I will definitely hang out for the party!

As of now, we're staying up the road in a brewery (really) in Bamberg, 45 minutes - one hour by train from Nuremburg. Price for a double is 55 Euro smoking, 65 non-smoking, including breakfast. Not really doing it to save money (as roundtrip train fare will be 20 Euro, give or take), but cuz Bamberg is supposed to be great, and I've always wanted to sleep legally in a brewery. :)
Info on Bamberg pubs and breweries here (from an Englishman, I believe): http://www.xs4all.nl/~patto1ro/bambpubs.htm

There are trains that run every half-hour from Munich to Nuremberg, getting you there in as little as an 1 hr., 18 minutes. The last train back (runs daily) from Nuremberg to Munich, leaves at 11:36PM, ICE 1615, getting into Munich at 12:56AM.
I'll be making the trip down probably on the day of the match from Diebach via Gemunden(Main), but at this point, the last reasonable train I can take back is probably only an hour or so after the end of the match, probably the EC 22 leaving at 7:35PM, stopping in Wurzburg and Gemunden, getting in at 9:31PM.
Granted, I'm looking at current timetables, and from what I understand, the summer timetables will feature increased service during the World Cup. However, that schedule won't be released until June 1st from what I understand.
