... but my highest recomendation stands
I dunno; I just got burned by these guys. Found what sounded like the perfect place for me and the luchador, but just as they were about to send the contract, suddenly the price doubled and there was a deposit attached where previously there was none. Left a really bad taste in my mouth.

Im paying only $768 total us. 200 deposit.

that may have been the renter doing that, homecompany just helps renters find listed places and takes a commission

I've just booked a 2BR apartment in the rural village of Flieden located between Rhone and Vogelsberg for just $30a night at www.vacationvillas.net
I found it to be a very user friendly website.
You can search by area, price, size, availability etc. There's over 1000 places listed for Germany at various prices....they all have pictures, detailed info and an easy link to contact the owner directly....
Does anybody know this area?
Hope this helps somebody! See you all in Germany!!

Me too. Just confirmed payment for a one bedroom apartment outside of Kirn, not far from K-town, for two weeks at €525. I'm psyched, because it's in a mountain biking region, and that has me wicked tempted to bring along my faithful Sugar. It's not as close to the action as the place I was gonna take that fell through, but the savings work out in the end. We only have to be somewhere at a set time on four occasions--three games and the flight home--so kicking back in the countryside and scoping out random German mountain villages sounds like a swell plan, especially 'cause I've only done Munich and Berlin, so this is all uncharted territory for me.
There's a second apartment in the same house that's still open for the period, if anyone's interested in being neighbors with "that guy in the wrestling mask and his little wife."

All of these places seem rather rural. Do you need to rent a car if you're going to stay there for a few weeks, or is there some type of public transportation in der Naehe?

The VacationVillas listing info will indicate whether or not you need a car to get around, and how far the place is from the nearest train station, airport, and highway. The place I got is 5km from the station (and the landlord offers to pick you up if you like), which, to a couple of Bostonians, is an easy walk. It's up to you whether or not it's worth the savings to stay further out or to pay extra for the convenience of a nearer location. In my case, I figure I'm gonna get the railpass that's good for the whole WC even though I can only attend for the group stage, so what the hell, might as well use the hell out of it while I'm there. Plus, for what amounts to half the price of the place I looked at that fell through (and if the landlord had initially quoted me the more expensive rate, I'd have seriously considered it, the location was that good), with all kinda crazy amenities, it's worth the hike. We were going to rent an apartment and commute to games no matter what, so there was never going to be one single location that wasn't a haul to at least one of the three venues.
I know it's pretty daunting, though, and I've spent the past two weeks second-guessing myself about whether or not I could've gotten a closer place for a relatively acceptable rate. I'm sure I could have if I'd booked sooner, but the holiday season wound up presenting some unexpected financial drains on the household funds, and the original idea of booking the minute the draw cities had been announced wasn't viable. It's also a drag knowing that lodging's in such high demand I can't invoke the magical discount hotel card I normally can (the luchador, by day, is in the employ of an international hotel chain). When it came down to it, the convenience, amenities, and novelty of a place I've never visited outweighed the travel involved.
I will say this: having grown up on a dairy farm, anyone who's looking to book that hay hostel in Idar-Oberstein will find it amusing for about one night. I don't care if you have a sleeping bag and the hay's fresh, it's still scratchy and pointy and lord help you if you have allergies.

We booked thru VacationVillas.net as well. We are renting a house located in between Cologne & Bonn from June 11-23. It's a little out of the way but we are saving over $800.00 versus staying in an appartment in Cologne. We rented a car and are planning on driving to all three of the Group Matches, the cost saving between the two places will more than pay for the car. So it worked out great for us.
Here is the site of our place;
