Pearce Praise For Shaun
By Alex Livie - Created on 28 Dec 2005

Stuart Pearce admits he would welcome Shaun Wright-Phillips back to Manchester City with open arms.

Wright-Phillips was lured away from Eastlands by a mega offer from Chelsea, but the move has not panned out for the England winger as he has been restricted to a peripheral role under Jose Mourinho.

Pearce claims it is too early to brand Wright-Phillips a Chelsea flop and expects the youngster to claim a World Cup place, but admits he would jump at the chance of luring the 24-year-old back to Manchester.

"It would be nice - he's a fantastic lad, a fantastic pro," said Pearce ahead of Wright-Phillips' return to Eastlands with Chelsea on Wednesday.

"You know what you're going to get, day in day out. We'd certainly love him to walk back through the door."

Pearce claims Wright-Phillips was correct to head to Chelsea in a bid to further his career and has backed him to come good.

"At the time it was a difficult move for him to turn down," added Pearce. "Chelsea looked like they could be all-conquering for the next 10 or 20 years.

"With the finances mentioned and everything that comes with Chelsea, at the time it was the right thing for Shaun to do.

"If somewhere down the line Chelsea or Shaun felt the move had not worked out for him, nothing has changed. At the time it was the right thing.

"It's too early in a five-year contract to suggest it hasn't worked out, that it's been a bad move."
