morning yall..
i do not need to be in the office this week.
counter-productive.. bigtime.
i hate end of month deadlines.
kill me~

At least there's a footie game to be had. Plus you can prep yourself with pre-game material for the Cotton Bowl, no?

Hey, Steph: What new kids toy are you already sick of?! :p Julia got this Barbie-related pegasus head that she's supposed to be able to decorate the mane, put on eye-shadow, etc. Of course, it doesn't work as gracefully or as well as advertised so it's a constant "I want to play with that - This doesn't work - I want to play with that - Mommy it's not working..."

We were never that bad as kids, were we?! ;)

I am so geeked on my new Sirius I can't leave my car!! I had a good time yelling at Stephen Cohen and his Chelsea bollocks yesterday.

Just got of the phone with the scouser mate of mine...we always mix it up about our teams....everyone's having a dig at the Arse these days.

Josh got the new version of the Millenium Falcon which is pretty cool but the ramp and stuff don't stay on so well so we are constantly putting it back together. He also got this cool T-Rex mountain thing that while he is playing with it, is very cool but it comes apart if you try to move it and it is BIG! :) and of course we were never this bad- we never had toys this cool! :D

My boy Eric got a very cool Lego castle thing with a bunch of knights and catapults and also an Imaginext castle with a cannon...so he and his sister have been having great fun laying siege to one another! I have to admit..I've joined in too!

Josh got the knights but not the big castle-that is next-either that or the pirate stuff! It is fun to play with but a pain in the butt to put together! :D

I was chompin' at the bit to put it together! My 8-year old genes were kicking in...Eric wouldn't let me put it together for three days...every day I'd go up to his room "Want me to put the big castle together bud?"..."nah..I wan't to do it myself" Some nerve...playing with his own toys without me!! :D

Now that is a cute bear. Joshua just watched the WIzard of Oz the other day and he liked it. Must be a real girl thing though because every girl I know under the age of 5 has ruby red slippers! ;)

He got Charlie and the Chocolate Factory and has been watching that like crazy.....

Does she appreciate it as Baum's political allegory regarding the turn-of-the-century Populist free silver movement?

Then who is the Wizard in that allegory, Yoss? I assume Dorothy is "The People?"

I promise you Yoss, she doesn't think for even one moment about that.

President McKinley. He's the leader of the Emerald City and is supposed to be powerful but is really just a political charlatan propped up by corporate (green paper money = emerald) interests. Yellow brick road (gold) leads to the Emerald City (greenbacks propped up by gold) a supposed utopia but really just an empty promise with no real substance to it.

Scarecrow is the American farmer.....told he's a dumb hick without a brain but actually possesses a great deal of common sense.

Tinman is the industrial worker....rendered heartless by the inhumanity of factory work. The farmer and the factory worker can only succeed if they work together (which they do in the end).

Cowardly lion is William Jennings Bryan. All bluster about fighting the gold standard but with questionable courage to really do the job.

Wicked witch of the East = eastern banking and corporate interests.

Wicked witch of the West = western water right's holders....the key to farm viability (which is why water kills her).

In the book Dorothy's slippers are silver....a metaphor for free silver being the counter to the oppressive gold standard. They were changed to ruby in the movie because the red showed up better in technicolor.

You da Historian, Yoss!

So, I forget...is this the whole "crucified on a cross of gold," thing? Did the free silver people (Democrats, IIRC) think that silver would let the currency float and somehow make money more available?

By the way I can assure you that I have never thought about the "allegorical" references that Yoss has pointed out either.....just like the movie-Joshua got the book at Chic-fila and I was wondering about the silver v. ruby red slippers though. Learn something new every day! ;)

Yes. Interestingly, Baum always laughed off the idea that WOZ was political allegory but it was a well known fact that he was very active in the Populist movement at the time.

....and now on to a discussion of Carroll's "Through the Looking Glass."

Did the free silver people (Democrats, IIRC) think that silver would let the currency float and somehow make money more available? Some so thought, while others thought/hoped it would devalue the dollar overall and allow for a restructuring of the economy. You see a pale version of this concept brought up in Die Hard III, of all places, and often makes for good conversation (sic) when compared and contrasted with Orwell's Animal Farm.

That is, If Yoss doesn't mind me chiming in. :o

Sorry for the delay folks, we had a power outage. AS hinted at many posts ago, Griffin's famous for them, so I can only assume the powers that be felt a quota was at stake for the year.

BINGO! In this man's opinion there is no toy on earth greater than Lego's, particularly the classic ones!

I loved the knights series and we'd play with those endlessly. I'd practically give up playing soccer again* if I could have every knights lego set ever made for me and my boy. And hell yes I'd be playing with him all day - screw cable/satellite TV! That's what lured me into architecture to begin with.

(* = author accepts the fact age, health and reality suggests he may never play organized soccer again anyway. Side note: My father was among the founding members of Georgia's Adult Soccer Program, a way for parents and coaches to acquaint themselves with the game in the 70's. Yes, it adopted a new name/acronym once the GSSA took it over.)

By all means, please do.....the more the merrier.......:)

Btw, one of my favorite final paragraphs in any book......

"Twelve voices were shouting in anger, and they were all alike. No question, now, what had happened to the faces of the pigs. The creatures outside looked from pig to man, and from man to pig, and from pig to man again; but already it was impossible to say which was which."
