Homo Sovieticus.

"In 1926 the Politburo in Moscow passed the request to the Academy of Science with the order to build a 'living war machine'."

"Stalin told the scientist 'I want a new invincible human being, insensitive to pain, resistant and indifferent about the quality of food they eat.'"

Other sources say the experiment worked:

"The doctor claimed that a race of apemen was created. They were extremely strong and covered with fur, worked tirelessly in the salt mines, and grew larger than the humans—but they could not reproduce."

I read about this in the Weekly World News several years ago......but they said the Soviets were mating men with bears not apes. I can't believe they missed that important fact.

Strange that this topic would be considered so important that Bush mentioned it in his State of the Union.

Yeah, it's sad that when I heard Bush say that on the SOTU, I immediately thought about this thread.

Funny how we love to laugh at the Soviets for politicizing science while a loud and politically active section of American society wants to ban evolution from schools and the Bush administration tries to deny global warming because it is politically inconvenient to their bosses, tries to ban stem cell research and then rails against "human-animal hybrids".

OK, it's not really funny. It's sad and scary.
