It seems FRA is the place of choice for arrivals. Just figured I'd start this and see who all is planning on arriving in FRA and when. Maybe we can all get together and catch a game at the river (http://www.frankfurt-tourismus.de/cms/tourismussuite/en/events_trade_fairs_messe_frankfurt/fifaworldcup_hotels_fifa_wm_2006/soccer_football_worldcup_events_main_arena2.html?sprache=%2Fcms%2Ftourismussuite%2Fen%2Fevents_trade_fairs_messe_frankfurt%2Ffifaworldcup_hotels_fifa_wm_2006%2Fsoccer_football_worldcup_events_main_arena2.html), drink some beers, and plan our tailgates...who knows, maybe even pack a train to G-town with U.S. supporters.

LAS-FRA

Arrive on the 9th of June

Train to Gelsenkirchen on the 12th.

Almost every flight into Germany direct from USA goes into Frankfurt, although there are also flights into Dusseldorf and Munich. FRA is a big airport, with two main sections and several terminals. There's a big McDonalds (not my personal fave) outside of the gate area with a view to takeoffs and landings and a kid's play area. Also, the Marriott(?) near the Messe in the city is a bit of an American hangout. They even have a sportsbar type thing, although it was trendy with Germans when I lived there.

That just looks odd. Maybe it will be cool. Some good, touristy places for drink and food south of the river there.

IAD - FRA ETA 10 June

FRA - IAD ETD 18 June

That Frankfurt river setup looks great - can't wait to check it out in person.

By the way, I just went through Frankfurt last month enroute to the U.S. Be ready for a very thorough and time consuming security process. I wen through three lines and was questioned extensively at the gate. BTW, I'm a 40-ish white male travelling on an official US Government passport. (e.g., everyone gets this treatment). Plan accordingly on departure day! :D

Whoa....While Frankfurt is the biggest international hub in Germany most flights originating from the US do NOT go into Frankfurt. Delta's route market list is the following:

JFK-TXL (Berlin)
JFK-FRA
ATL-FRA 2x
ATL-DUS (Dusseldorf)
ATL-STR (Stuttgart)
ATL-MUC (Munich)
CVG-FRA

Continental flies to Hamburg, Berlin, Frankfurt and Munich

That secret is still safe - otherwise, I would have gotten the rubber glove treatment for sure.

since we are coming from england, will we be held up in customs the same way Roadkit was?? wont we have already been thru customer as Heathrow?

Probably flying into Frankfurt on Sunday, June 11th around 1:00PM. Plan is to meet up with some other New England-based U.S. supporters there, then making our way to the main rail station to catch our train to Diebach, that being about a 2 hour trip from Frankfurt.

FRA is in Neu Isenberg and it's probably 5-7miles from the city center. You can catch the bus or train into the city center relatively easy. IF you don't already have a rental I would NOT plan on getting one when you're there.

There's also a Super Walmart nearby and while it may go against your ideal culture learning process to shop there (even though it has a lot of similarities to ALDI's) its the cheapest place to find souvenirs and to buy german beer and to get all your other trip supplies.

To get to Frankfurt, just go downstairs and catch the S-Bahn. You want one that says "Richtung Frankfurt am Main". You can also take a little skyway over to the DB trains, but unless you're heading on from there then I'd reco the S-Bahn and it's probably cheaper. The DB trains will terminate at Frankfurt's main train station (Hauptbahnhof). The S-Bahn trains normally continue on for a ways, so you'd do best to hop off at the Hauptbahnhof or the Hauptwache exit. It's a little nicer area near Hauptwache.

Frankfurt's fairly densely populated, so I don't think you'll find too many Biergartens in the city proper, but they might do some special things for the WC (beyond the riverfront). Also, you don't normally find televisions in Biergartens, but you probably knew that.

Coming in is not the problem - it's leaving. And it's not the customs bit, it's security. In the US you go through one checkpoint - at Frankfurt I went through no less than three. So if you get a late start on departure day, you're hungover, whatever, it can be a real hassle. A necessary hassle but a hassle nonetheless.

Whoa. I was waiting another month or so to buy airline tickets but that doesn't seem wise.

I will miss the first game becaue of the kids, though we'll be in Chicago watching it. We arrive the 16th from CHI, rent a car and drive either to 1) our villa in Idar-Oberstein or 2) straight to K'lautern for the match, depending on how long it takes to get out of Frankfurt. Somebody post on cool places to hang out in K'lautern before the game.

I booked mine the night the draw came out. Not cheap. I searched Travelocity, Orbitz, Expedia, Cheaptickets, etc. I looked into round-trip, open-jawed (arrive in one city, fly out of another), one-way, etc. No matter how much I "patched" together an overall flight(s) to Frankfurt, it was going to cost me $1000 a piece. I finally found a non-stop round-trip flight from Ohare to Frankfurt on American Airlines, departing on the 16th and arriving on the 17th. Looks like we will be a day behind you!

Your trip sounds like a blast... enjoy!:D
