Remember, a seat ísn't guaranteed in 1st or 2nd class (at least from all the stuff I've read) unless you make a reservation. You can make them up to 60 days ahead of time...which I definitely plan on doing.

Just got my flight info and I am in!!
Flying Delta out of Orlando and arriving in Frankfort at 9:30 am on the 12th -- from there I'm hopping the train to Gelsenkirchin just in time for some tailgating and on to the match. After that its North to Amsterdam for a few days before heading to K-town.
We're flying out on the 23rd at 12:45pm likely still with a hangover from post-Ghanan victory partying.

Is ahyone else flying into Frankfurt on Sunday the 11th? A bunch of New England-area U.S, supporters will be getting in between 10:00AM -
2:30PM, most likely meeting up between arrivals at an airport pub before we head off to Frankfurt (Main) Bahnhof to catch our train, and it would be nice to meet some other U.S. fans at the airport for a pint... or four :D
Let me know if you're flying into Frankfurt on the 11th, and maybe we can enjoy an impromptu party at an airport watering hole.

Evan, if you mean you're arriving in Frankfurt on the 11th, I'll be getting in from Newark (after an overnight flight) at 9:30 AM as I posted above. Would love to meet up with you guys for some drinks and food before heading off to Dusseldorf, although I'd suggest taking the train into town and finding a bar near the Hauptbahnhof to do it at instead. The airport bar will have jacked up prices and the area around Frankfurt's Hbf has a ton of bars and restaurants (not to mention the second-largest red light district in Europe :D), doing it there would be cheaper and probably get better food and a better selection of beer.

I don't know that there's that big a difference in the beer prices, although to be fair I didn't pay that much attention -- I always got free beer in the airport lounges -- part of the Euro business class experience. But more importantly, a lot of the long haul trains now connect directly out of FRA, you don't go into the Hauptbahnhof. So for ease of logistics you might want to stick with the "at the airport plan". And if you want to really economize there is a small supermarket on one of the lower levels (just above the local train connections). You can buy cold beer, booze, food, chocolates, sandwiches, hot food. Might be nice for when you get off the train. There are some tables there, although I don't recall any chairs - sort of "lean and eat". Worst case we could just take over the hallway outside the place.

Didn't know that about the trains, certainly makes things a lot easier--although my flight gets in in the morning and I can't check into my hostel in Dusseldorf until like 2, so I may head into downtown Frankfurt to kill some time anyway. Whatever people want to do, I'm up for.

IF you decide to go into downtown Frankfurt, I'd strongly recommend going to the Hauptwache stop instead of the Hauptbahnhof. Getting in and out of the Hauptbahnhof is actually a little confusing, particularly if you're a touch jet lagged and most of the area immediately around it is a bit skanky. There's not any nice area to sit around outside and nearby is the redlight area (not touristy like Amsterdam) and it's where the junkies hang out. It's not too dangerous or anything, just not exactly pleasant or the first impression I'd want of a country.
The Hauptwache is the next major stop on the S-Bahn lines (the big trains stop at the Hauptbahnhof and you have to get off and change onto a train that heads towards the Sudbahnhof in the S-Bahn platforms downstairs), so if you're on an S-Bahn train that came into the central station underground you just stay on for two more stops*. This comes out near where the Zeil, which is Frankfurt's main shopping street and the Fressegasse, restaurant row, intersect. This area is a lot more interesting if you want to go into the city. If any groups want to meet there then you can use the Hauptwache building as a meeting point. This is a two story standalone ornamental building which is now a cafe. They serve beer, wine, coffee, tea, softdrinks and as well as food, although there are a ton of options for eats nearby, including a McDs, KFC and Pizzahut in the station, plus plenty of good food as well.
*One or two of the S-Bahn lines terminate with the regular trains. You'll be able to tell if you're on one because you'll stop above ground. Follow the crowds along until you find a large escalator down, then go onto Tracks (Gleis) 101-102 which go towards (in Richtung) Frankfurt Sud, Hanau, Offenbach, Langen and Darmstadt.

Here's a link I found which shows a good map of the Frankfurt Hauptbahnhof. It's a PDF file if that's a problem for you. The map is all in German, which you should probably start to get used to now.
Frankfurt Hauptbahnhof station map (http://**************.com/crzaw)
Note that it's a large, somewhat irregular shaped building with several levels and at least thirteen different exits that I counted.
Here's a map of the Hauptwache station which is to be fair no less confusing. But once you're above ground there you can find the Hauptwache building very easily, since it's next to you for almost every exit you take (it sits more or less over the station).

Here's a picture of the Hauptwache itself. Looks like it was taken VERY early on a fall morning, since there are usually lots of pedestrians and vehicles nearby.

For those looking for flights from the New York area (or elsewhere easily connectable), Singapore Air has very good rates right now.
I booked for $830 (about $200 less than the other big carriers), but there are other flights in the $700s. The flight cost is higher on Expedia for Singapore than the Singapore Air website.
For those not in the know, Singapore is considered one of the best two or three airlines in the world. Looking forward to my flight at this price.

Singapore Air is a wonderful airline. Absolutely first rate. But some SA flights out of NYC are codeshare with KLM and Continental, IIRC. KLM is also a very good airline. I don't have much experience with Continental.

The one I happen to be on is not codeshare, but worth checking it out if pursuing this option. Struck me as a good price for direct to Frankfurt, about $200 or $300 less than mediocre airlines like Delta.
