Blimey, is this subject still going? I'd forgotten all about it until I came here this morning.
On Monday (yesterday) I spoke to my mum on the telephone. She likes Liverpool. She didn't even KNOW that Liverpool played in this game. THAT'S how much news coverage it got in England. Almost nil.
Viewing figures on the t.v were very low (it wasn't even on either of the main football channels) and press reports in the newspapers were way behind the bog standard Premiership games this weekend.
Even if Liverpool would have won...the general response of the country would have been "So what, big deal!".
I guarantee that well over 90% of the general football liking public across the whole of Europe wouldn't even have known there was even a tournament going on. I mean, look at this section. Not many European fans even talking about this tournament either before or after. Do you really think the average Bayern Munchen or Inter Milan fan was aware of who won this game, much less cared??
Nice that some South Americans think it's important but the rest of the world clearly don't think much of it.
Now, let that be a lesson to you. Enjoy your win, but don't let yourselves think it really means a great deal. It doesn't.

And that's why England will never win another World Cup. They are not capable of winning something outside that little island, the rest of the world is not important, they only care about its own territory.
Do you know how do we call that in Brazil? We call it a REGIONAL TEAM! It means that the side has some karma and is just not capable of win something out of its country or it's region (Europe, for example). And this is Liverpool... don't say you people don't give a ********. We all know that if Liverpool had won the tournamente, you all would be at the streets screamming and welcoming your team. You really can't use that as an excuse.
And if you britains really don't care (cause the spanish and the italians really care), we have NOTHING to do with that.
Greetings from the BEST TEAM OF THE WORLD! Yeah, that's right. We won a tournament that gives us this title. If you shooted 50 million times at goal and didn't scored, too bad, that's because you are terrible.

Really? And you know Liverpool do you? Hmmmm, have you ever been there? Sorry sunshine but Liverpool fans didn't scream and shout when they won the Super Cup (another useless cup)......and they wouldn't have been screaming and shouting had they won this silly tinpot cup either.
Did you see me here on this board proclaiming how important this trophy is last week? How many Liverpool fans were going on about how fabulous this trophy is before they lost to Sao Paulo?
You haven't got a clue what you are talking about.

Erm actually we did score. Twice in fact. Liverpool sored MORE goals than Sao Paulo, had more possesion than Sao Paulo, had more attacking play than Sao Paulo, had more shots on goal than Sao Paulo, had more corners than Sao Paulo but hey if you are proud that the ref let you win by default then all power to you. Personally I'd be embarrased to keep going on about your ridiculous defaulted 'win'.
Best team in the world? Dream on son. Even if Liverpool would have won, nobody would be calling them the best team in the world. Hell, they are the Champions Of Europe but how many people call them the 'best team in Europe'? Not many. Even I don't believe they are the 'best team in Europe'.
You are seriously deluded if you think Sao Paulo are the 'best team in the world'. You even struggled in your semi final.
Nobody cares about Sao Paulo 'winning' (and I use that term loosely because Liverpool played them off the park). It's not a big deal around the world. Accept it and move on..........like most of youir Brasilian players do.LOL.

The second ball curled from outside the field... About the interpretation guideline, oh yeah, it´s quite old already, I remember that in a Placar in the early 90´s. Good guidance, should award more goals and such. But, guess what.... nobody respects it. No referee in Europe, Asia, Oceania, Central America, South America respects it. They always rule as a offside. And it happens even in the English Premier League!!! So, there´s nothing new in this play.
By the way, FIFA is going to take down this useless guidance. Useless = nobody uses lol
Since when a rule is no longer adopted because it’s old? Also, just because references are not commonly made, that doesn't mean it isn’t applied.

Dude I dunno bout you but if I play cards, video games anything anything at all...I play to win..I want to win...do you really think Pros travel overseas, see a World Championship Cup sitting on the sideline and DONT WANT TO WIN IT?! You are out of your mind. Enough excuses....THE WORLD CLUB CHAMPIONSHIP IS SET UP JUST LIKE THE WORLD CUP....if the wcc is worthless than so is the WC. You choose.
You misquoted me. Next time try to quote the whole post so you don't take things out of the context.
I very clearly said whenever someone plays something they play to win, but it doesn't mean it's necessarily important for them. Not in one moment I said Liverpool played to lose, but playing to win doesn't mean you think whatever you are competing in is important. For instance, in soccer, when teams play an international friendly, of course they want to win, but that doesn't make the friendly gain in importance.
About the second thing you said, what do you mean "The World Club Championship is set up just like the World Cup"?

Look, you are losing foot on your arguments
First, you ruled out my method straight away saying I was using the wrong frame (which I've shown to be irrelevant), then you came with some "clear daylight" thing, now this "few inches" and "virtually in the same line" stuff
You are the one who seems confused, and you show that by misquoting me. Where did I say anything about "clear daylight"? That was another poster, pay more attention.
It doesn't look good when you want to say someone is "losing their foot on their arguments by being confused" when you show us all you are actually the confused one, by mixing the posts of two different posters and turning them into a single quote.
Second, you are posing as the bearer of the truth but you seem a bit confused about the subject
Sure, now I'm "posing as the bearer of the truth" because I'm defending my positions on the subject under debate. Nice logic, what's a board of discussion for?
FIFA alone does not have a say on the laws of the game; that's IFAB's job (though FIFA is one of the associations taking part of it)
Granted, you got this one right.
Third, even the guidelines are documented by IFAB
I can't find the text of such guideline on IFAB's 2005 booklet even though I know there is such one
I can't be bothered to look it up, but like you yourself acknowledge, everyone knows that guideline exists.
- I believe you are misinterpretating it though, as far as I'm concerned all it says is that in case of doubt, favour the attacking player
If it were as you say, it's obvious no one follows it because it is rather dumb - what is "virtually in the same line"? How many inches are "few inches"? How many inches are enough to declare offside or not? Calling or not an offside is let to each one's judgement, and if so, the linesman might have judged that the attacking player was ahead enough to rule an offside
I respect your opinion, because interpretation is always subject to the interpreter's view. However, I believe common sense can define these difficult, challenging, abstract issues...
I find it hard to believe a human being standing 20+ yards away can tell with precision, in a fraction of a second, if a "part of a players body" is two or three inches ahead of the last defender in that exact moment. Since human beings are not machines, the offside interpretation guideline we have referred to was created and from then on, insignificant (= define it by common sense) margins should no longer be considered.
I also find it hard to believe this same person can tell a ball curled outside the field in a corner kick and still somehow it lands 10+ yards away from the goal line into the field and right in front of the goal. That must have been one hell of a curve! Not even TV replays can indicate that. IMO, the most ridiculous decision in the game.
This was a very interesting lineman.
- and please accept it already, you may kick about all you want but that doesn't change the fact that Garcia was clearly ahead!
There you go again, it's funny how everything is so "clear" for the São Paulo supporters. Clear things are not subject to debate.
I've also seen several Corinthians fans saying in the recent game against Internacional the infamous "penalty" incident was "clearly" not a penalty. If everything is so clear, there would be no need for this board in the first place.

I hate going personal in comments, but this statement shows you have never put a foot in English soil, probably not even in Europe, or if you have, you stuck to doing your shopping and didn't look around much. Hence, you know very little or nothing about its culture.
Not everything that happens in Brazil can be translated to other countries.
']Greetings from the BEST TEAM OF THE WORLD! Yeah, that's right. We won a tournament that gives us this title.
No it doesn't. Knockout competitions in soccer are not designed to determine the best team among the pack.
It does give you the title of "World Champions", enjoy it. Just don't forget it's nothing but a formality until it wins the respect of the... world. ;)
']If you shooted 50 million times at goal and didn't scored, too bad, that's because you are terrible.
They did score, but then we will have to go on and on about the referring decisions, so just read the posts in the first part of the thread.

Actually, brazilians are probably the people that cares less about what europeans think about football. Because we know we are the best. So what we think its important, its important.
I, for example, woud rather watch a beach volley match than a UEFA Cup match. Thats how we care about your competitions. Cheers.

When I was young, I didn't like chocolates, even though I had never tasted it. When I was older, I finally tried chocolate for the first time and realized how good it was!
That's the same reaction the Liverpool are having. They had 3 chances of becoming the world champions and they did not win. I believe the main reason Liverpool fans do not "care" about the world championship is because they have never won it, after all, even the Premier League took a long time befor they could win it again. It's hard to like something and care about something that you know you probably won't get it.
More specially, can you imagine losing for the third time for a south american team? After all, brazilians do not have half the economic power the british people have, brazilians live in avery violent society with a lot of slums, just like many british people commented...some even compared the movie "City of God" to the way brazilians live.
Sao Paulo's entire payroll is perhaps smaller than Gerrard's salary! Wow, that's what I call overrating and good planning... You could change 3 players on that team, get some brazilians, save a lot of money and actually win something.
By the way...if we were to compare movies with real life, England would be in very bad shape...after all, are really all british people as stupid as Mr. Bean?

You would hardly find any brazilian commentator claiming this in 2001. We knew there were national teams in a better moment than Brazil. The Brazil NT players were even angry with the press, because of the amount of critics they received that time. But then we proved our strenght in the world cup again.
If I see an american commentator saying they are the best at basketball, all I have to do is to agree. They really are. Thats the same situation with Brazil By seeing our records, our titles, our great players, only a dumb person would refuse Brazil is the greatest football nation through history.
And we brazilians just know that.
