Is there anyplace to stay in this town?? I can't find a damn thing for less than $57/night, and Heidelberg and Saarbrucken are even worse.

LOL!! Dude... just thank God the game isn't in Munich or some other larger city (Frankfurt, Berlin)... try $150 a night MINIMUM. Germany will be milking the shite out of this cup. The rumors we not false.
Let me know what hotel you find in Kaiserslautern. I am in the same boat. :D
Heidelberg is a major tourist town... university town as well... so prices will be steep. Mannheim I cannot speak on or Saarbrucken. Karlsruhe may be too far south, as definitely is the case with Baden-Baden, although the spa's there are calling my name after a 9 hour flight!!! ;)
Best of luck.

Well, the thing is that I'm talking even youth hostels. I just want to get to the games, I don't care how much of a craphole I have to stay in...I'm actually thinking of spending a couple nights in Berlin between 2 of the games (I'll probably be getting the unlimited-use rail pass so it won't cost anything) and found a place to stay there for about $25/night.

Gotcha. I don't qualify for some of those since I am of older stature. And, not sure the wife would really go for that sort of thing.
See if you Rail pass will cover some overnight trains and bed down in those on occasion.

Try pension blum. We got a double with Breakfast on the night of the 17th for 70 Euro...I don't know what a single goes for, but I'd assume two twins in one room would be 35 Euro. It's like 100 meters from the Hbf and a 10 minute walk to the stadium. Can't beat the location!

Also, go to the Ktown website (www.kaiserslautern.de) and check out the tourism section and go to hotels and lodging...it lists everything available. I e-mailed a bunch of them and Pension Blum was one of the few with availability as of last week.
Great freaking location. Good luck!

Think about staying somewhere else and taking the train in - it will likely be cheaper and then you can hang with the rest of us!

I wonder if we can figure out a way for US military families in K-town to host some US travellers?
Otherwise, $57 a night seems kind of reasonable to me. I once went to Frankfurt at the last minute and had to spend about 80 Euro a night (after haggling with the front desk manager) for a flea bag place right next to the methodone clinic. Their regular rates were 35-50 Euro a night, but there was some second tier convention at the Messe, so there was no lodging to be found anywhere. You don't even want to think about Frankfurt hotel prices during the WC game days, or maybe even in between.
When we first moved to Frankfurt area there was the Book Fair, a big publishing show, in progress. At first we were told the only available hotel room was 100 kilometres away. This was a month or two in advance. Our admin support finally found us a suite in a little out of the way hotel about 2/3 of the way to Wiesbaden. There was some strange German Buddhist meeting going on at the hotel and lots of folks wandering around in robes with shaved heads. But the restaurant was quite good.

Anyone going to be there for the March 1 match v. Poland? Besides me, that is.

Looking into it. Found reasonable airfare from ORD. Where are you flying into Doogie?

Booked officially... just tried yesterday. I have emailed at least 10 different places in the city itself and it has been hard-pressed to get replies in a timely fashion. That being said, I did the same in Munich and found replies to be quicker but not from every hotel. I have only K-town and Frankfurt left to book. Frankfurt is dreadfully expensive!
So far the following are booked on www.kaiserslautern.de:
-Pension Blum
-Altstadt Hotel
-Hotel Heymann
Have not heard from:
>STADT HOTEL
>PFALZER HOF
>HOTEL ZEPP
>HOTEL ZULLAMT
>HOTEL LAUTERTALER HOF
Any and all assistance is most highly recommended.

Sounds like it might be my plan ROADKIT. If I don't find somewhere soon, then I am booking outside the area, then training into the city for the game. My problem is my wife and I are due to arrive that very morning in Frankfurt, which is a two hour train ride away. As those of you who have travelled overseas will know, staying awake that first day until dark is essential in getting past the effects of "jet-lag". I am banking on some sleep on the flight, but if that doesn't happen, then we are going be wiped out... so a place to crash immediately in the neighboring areas of Kaiserslautern sounds awfully nice at this point!!! :)

It took me days to get replies and, like you, did not receive responses from most. Munich places were faster, albeit mostly booked or way too expensive. Finally settled on Hotel Eder in Munich.
did you e-mail pension blum directly? the ktown website said they were booked, but I e-mailed anyhow and was able to get a room, so you never know....
For frankfurt, try hotels.de, or the
frankfurt tourism website (http://www.frankfurt-tourismus.de/cms/tourismussuite/en/home.html?sprache=%2Fcms%2Ftourismussuite%2Fen%2Fhome.html)
Good luck!

Thank Jorge and yes... I did email them from the HOTEL's website... booked. URgh!
Munich I found a place as well... could not believe the price as everything was 150.-Euro's or higher. Hotel Blauer Bock is the joint, right smack in the middle of Munich. Spending 4 days there... hey, what can I say... I am a huge Bayern Munich fan!! ;)
That Frankfurt source is very good. I have received two emails back from Frankfurt and it looks to be more expensive than Munich at present.

I recommend this following site to assist in your search for a room. I FINALLY found a room within 15 minutes drive or train ride to Kaiserslautern through this site. Recommended...
http://www.hoteldatenbank.de/
search under "Stadte" link at the top and search under any letter of the Alphabet for a city... this is a list of ALL cities and their "listed" hotels. I searched neighboring cities of Kaiserslauetern with web addresses I could email (ie. websites that I could get an email address off of... since it is bloody expensive to fax something!!). Warning: do be careful -- sometimes there are more than one city in Germany under a specific name -- in this case, remember you are looking in the Pfalzer Region. This should help narrow down the names of cities. Of course, having a good detailed map of Germany is key in order to search for town and small cities. Unfortunately, I haven't a good map to post for this. Try the following cities:
-Landstuhl (edit)
-Trippstadt
-Ramstein-Miesenbach...(this is where I found Hotel Merkur)
-Wellerbach
-Homburg
-Eisenberg
Some of the hotels listed for these cities may not have website links on this page... in that case, just cut and paste the hotel name in Google and do a search on another sourse... see if you can't find a web address. 2nd Warning: turn-around time, if you are lucky, is 24 hours typically I have found on emails... some, I am still waiting!!

I think this one you might mean "Landstuhl", which is a town near K-town (also with Military facilities). Just in case anyone is copy-pasting to google or other search stuff.

My wife and I are looking to see if anyone would be interested in sharing a houseboat near Kaiserslautern from 6/16-6/23. Please PM me for details if you're interested.
