Booked officially... just tried yesterday. I have emailed at least 10 different places in the city itself and it has been hard-pressed to get replies in a timely fashion. That being said, I did the same in Munich and found replies to be quicker but not from every hotel. I have only K-town and Frankfurt left to book. Frankfurt is dreadfully expensive!
So far the following are booked on www.kaiserslautern.de:
-Pension Blum
-Altstadt Hotel
-Hotel Heymann
Have not heard from:
>STADT HOTEL
>PFALZER HOF
>HOTEL ZEPP
>HOTEL ZULLAMT
>HOTEL LAUTERTALER HOF
Any and all assistance is most highly recommended.
If I were you,I would recommend you some nice hotel not directly in Kaiserslautern, but in nice area of Rheinland-Pfalz - there are many nice lovely city and very nice hotels - much better than in K-town.
Here is good web-site about Rheinland-Pfalz (it is federal state where Kaiserlautern is localated).
Have a look at:
http://www.rlp-info.de/index.php?id=1&L=2
it is very beautiful countryside, with many nice cities and good german wine.

bltleo - My wife and I are staying in Worms and plan on travelling to Kaiserslautern by car the morning of the US Italy game.
What is your opinion of the city Worms? Are there any special sites we should see on non- game days? Thank you.

Worms is actually very nice city
here is good web-site
http://www.worms.de/deutsch/tourismus/
you can also do many trips to Rhine Area - very good wine area in Germany
I would recommend cities like Speyer, Neustadt an der Weinstrasse or so called Südliche Weinstrasse (Southern German Wine road). Just have a look at the web-site of Rheinland-Pfalz I mentioned before, you will find there many good information. There are many nice castles in this area and beautiful countryside. It depends if you would like to do travelling around or just stay in Worms.
I come back to your question soon. and give you more details.

Thank you, that is a very good website.
I was wondering (if I am imposing on you too much please tell me!) if you could reccomend a "spa town" (Bad I think, in German) somewhere near Worms where one could have spa treatments and massage.
PS My wife wants this info but it sounds good to me too.

does anyone have an idea on how late the trains will be running during the world cup? the us game is at 9 so if its not over and out of the stadium til 1130 or so, is it going to be possible to catch a train back to another city like frankfurt that late?
I think this is a crucial question for those of us still considering going to the US-Italy match. Can we stay in Frankfurt, or do we need to get a room in or near Kaiserslautern?
Anyone have a clue?

I never have a clue but that doesn't stop me from thinking I know everything.
But I digress....Frankfurt will hyave the same housing shortages (read expensive and hard to find) as Kaiserslautern, I suggest a place further out near a train station, maybe even a villa. Check out this site, still places available:

The wife and I are staying in Manheim the night of the game in Kaiserslautern. I believe it is an hour away by train.

try emailing here about room requests:

I just booked, too, at the Hotel Zum deutschen Michel through K-
town tourist information. I am a little suspicious as this hotel was wide open and everything else booked solid. That, the 50 euro price and the Bahnhof location make me worry about fleas and bedbugs.

Hummm... I tried emailing Hotel Zum way back... the K-town conglomerate do not in general respond to email very effeciently. Perhaps they had bookings that didn't confirm and thus opened rooms recently.
Good for you! I say keep it. Do a Google on "Hotel Zum, Kaiserslautern" and find out more...

I am staying in Mannheim, which does not appear to be too too far away from K-town. I'm at the Bed and Breakfast Mannheim for June 16th and June 17th. Anyone else staying in Mannheim, or anyone know how close to K-town it really is? I know its a big hub for trains coming in across Europe, so I figured it would be a good place to stay as I am planning on arriving here from Paris, and then departing to Munich after my stay.

According to the Deustche Bahn schedules, you are correct... it is an approximate 1-hour train ride. The train lines actually go southwest a bit I believe through Neustadt before heading northwest to K-town.... thus the 1-hour average of time to reach your destination. I only know this much because my wife and I will be relying solely on train travel, so I wanted desparately to book a room somewhere near a major drop point on the railline tha would go into Mannheim. (and yes, Mannheim is a HUGE transfer point for the DB).

Thanks for the tip, mate! I will look into it... would be much nice to not have to worry about getting on another train after the match on that day!
Cheers.

Did you ever find any websites for this hotel? I cannot find a thing.
Do you know if it is a "bathroom/shower" down the hall type deal or what?

book hotels in kaiserslautern online here (http://www.kaiserslautern.de/tourismus/hotels_und_unterkuenfte/index.html?lang=en)
click on the "look for and book hotels", and then on the next page there's an option to "Search online-bookable rooms only", check that off and you can reserve for Zum deutschen Michel.
i got a single room with shower/wc for 30 euro
