"If a club can only have five foreigners among their starting 11, then they will have to build on their own youth system.

"If Chelsea were forced to have five foreigners then Roman Abramovich could not go on buying the best players across the world for exorbitant fees.

"Chelsea is the example of what should not happen.

In clubs like Liverpool and Bayern Munich there's only one or two domestic players. This isn't good for football."

Liverpool's first-team squad includes the likes of Steven Gerrard, Jamie Carragher, Peter Crouch, Stephen Warnock and Scott Carson - all of whom are qualified to play for England.

Chelsea shouldn't happen.

we could say the same thing about you.

edit. sounds harsh, i know, but your post seems very silly, considering this is a Chelsea board.

completely agree... I and many others did criticize them last year when something similar was said.

Nothing against the current Chelsea squad because they were put together under the same rules as every other team and there are no valid reasons that they are better than ManU or say Real except for the fact that they made better purchases and perhaps have a better coach.

However, is there anybody else that actually liked the old 3 foreigner rule? I know that I did. I think the shift in player movement has caused certain teams and perhaps leagues to have lost a lot of their national identity.

I did like the old EC with just the champions as well.

well... we may have spent 20M on a player recenty, but he doesn't sit on our bench. Combined, all of the players who've played Fullback for us this season, O'Shea, Heinze, Neville, Brown, Bardsley and Richardson cost less than Chelsea's right back.

So beacsue you spend less than us recently, but still more than everyone else, its ok to criticize? That doesn't add up.

Sepp blather neglected to mention expensively assembled sides like inter milan ,barca ,madrid ,etc ..But FIFA dont have any power in making rules for UEFA domestic and euro ball ,so his words are worthless .

we never bought an entire starting line up (bar 3) and bench in a 2 year span and we generally spent what we earned. The days of our big splurges came mostly after we'd won quite a bit, as compared to a club that hadn't won the league in 50 years and had no means to even stay alive bar a sugar daddy. We weren't buying a team but rather re-inforcing it with purchases here and there. Chelsea outspent the teams in the league combined at least twice over.

Where is the rule book again on spending money? Again when you stop out spending the likes of Middlesborough and Nottingham Forest, them we can talk. The rich complainging about the richer, hyopcritical.

Just bitter fans of the Glazer take over, a direct result of your club going public to make more money.

Oh and when you have four high priced strikers: RVN, ROoney, Saha, and Smith(before his "transformation"), thats quite a bit of money on the bench. then there is spending 60 million on two players(Veron and RVn) or was it 50? Breaking the transfer fee record for a defender. Again, glass houses...

and thats why we fielded a team against you lot last season that cost less than the combined price of Ronney, Rio, and Van Horseface

and we still won 3-1!

Blatter reeks of ignorance. We have a fair amount of English players and the comparison to Liverpool is laughable.

Warnock and Carson are big stretches to play for England

Carragher is a squad player at best

and Crouch...

well.

Perhaps Mr. Blatter should look at our current youth set up where we have quite a few England U19s and U17s.

Barca:
Valdes, Puyol, Oleguer, and Xavi are all regular starters. Jorquera, Gabri, Iniesta, and Ezquerro are all regular subs. Of all those players, I believe only one or two didnt come from the youth system. All those players are Spanish, with the majority coming from Barcelona. Messi and Motta came through the youth teams I believe, but are foreign. Barcelona also have two Spaniards, Damia and Ruben, who have played first team ball and will be part of the team in the near future.

Real:
Casillas, Salgado, Helguera, Ramos, Pavon, Raul Bravo, Guti, Raul, Soldado, and recently De La Red and Bilbao (I am also forgetting the backup keeper's name).

Both of these teams have quite a bit of domestic players, most from the youth team.

In terms of the England team, he is behind Terry, Campbell, Ferdinand and King.
Wonderful player, talented and getting better all the time.

However, in reality, when we have a fully fit team, he is indeed a squad player.
