[Begins worthless help] Sounds bad.. did you restart?[/stops worthless help]

Yep, multiple times. Plus system restore doesn't work on my computer for whatever crazy reason.

Every time I restart, a screen pops up and says something to the effect of, "There is something in the bay. Please make sure it is inserted properly and restart the computer."

So, the DVD drive doesn't physically open at all? Is there something inside it? Also is there a small hole on the front of the drive? If so, you can put a paperclip into it and open it that way. Sometimes that's what it takes for the computer to recognize the drive.

If that doesn't work, see if your computer recognizes the drive at all.

Nope, it doesn't open at all. There is a CD inside it. The computer doesn't recognize the drive is there except when I first turn the computer on, and it gives me that screen I talked about where it says, "There is something in the bay that can't be detected. Make sure it is pushed all the way in and restart the computer". I actually took the plastic plate that covers the drive on the outside off and messed around in there, but the drive wouldn't come out.

It was an Auto Update from Dell for the DVD RW.

Alot of times, there is a small hole on the front of a CD-ROM drive or a DVD drive. It's just big enough to fit a straightened out paper clip in. When you push in the end of the paper clip, that usually forces the drive open manually....

Of course, Zinn may not need a paper clip to hit that button.

Now that I think about it, we may have stumbled upon why the drive is stuck shut.

Holy shit, that actually worked. Big ups Motter and Acht. :)

The thing still doesn't work, but I got my CD out. Anyone have a clue how to get the drive reconnected now.

Just spent two hours on the phone with Jose at Dell. He's sending me a new DVD drive, but I'm not going to have a clue how to put the bitch in.

Yeah, Jose is the shit. I selected all of the best service options for him on the after-call survey. :)

Now I need to find a screwdriver before my new DVD drive comes.
