Thanks again, my desktop did indeed have an ethernet port and I connected that way and this post is the first one coming via the laptop.

Still having one small problem that I can't figure out. When I first installed the router I kept getting sent to a "provision screen" at my isp (on the desktop) as it was saying that the cable box doesn't recognise my PC anymore and I had to re-name it. Well fair enough the router probably changed things.

Now that I'm on the laptop I keep getting sent there too but for some reason I can't connect with my ISP to register it. It's weird as the "provision screen" pops up whenever I type a web adress in IE but I can still get here and surf the net via a search engine......don't ask me what's going on,lol, just wanted to thank you guys for getting me this far. I'll call up my ISP now and see what's shakin'.

Do you know it actually pisses me off when I see people using a browser that's not firefox? I mean, if you're an IT nut or just know your way around computers and its a temporary thing fine - but otherwise, why the hell not!!!???

As a web developer, I can assure you that the greatness of firefox is greatly exaggerated. And IE is not that bad.

I just changed to Firefox from IE7 on my PC, because the old thing was sooo slow it was ridiculous. IE6 was alright, but the PC slowed down dramatically with IE7. I have to admit one downside (at least initially) is the interface (not sure if that's the right word) of Firefox looks so outdated. The simplicity of its graphics and menus is not a good thing. However, it definitely runs faster and I hear it's less bug-ish, so I'm not really complaining. I had a similar problem when I initially changed over from Netscape to IE years ago (I changed because my work computer used IE, and I thought it made more sense to keep up with one browser format). I initially hated the layout and found it difficult or just stupid to navigate. Eventually, I got used to IE. I'm hoping that once I break the IE habit, I'll like Firefox more.

I AM still using IE7 on the laptop though. :D For now.

My IE7 is really slow too. How do you switch to Firefox?

http://www.mozilla.com/en-US/firefox/

Download it, install it. It will convert your Favorites from IE. Then delete IE (that's what I did anyway). No problems so far.

Hey - CSS expressions were supported by IE since like version 4.0 or so. :)
Also, certain types of flash movies on certain pages in Firefox don't work the way they are supposed to, learned it the hard way.

Also, always liked the IE's zone-based security model for intranet, CM tools, etc. What else? Oh yeah, wtf doesn't Firefox support contentEditable? Not good. Also, window.createPopup not supported in Firefox? I am sorry, but that's just retarded on their part. window.showModalDialog also doesn't work which creates problems and breaks stuff in Firefox.
I guess those are the most obvious ones for web developers :)

What is the best, easiest, and SAFEST way to rip videos from sites like YouTube?

Admittedly I'm not a web developer, but I end up reading a lot of their crap, including their complaints about lack of proper standards support in IE6. I always hear CSS complaints, and more recently some about Ajax (which, as I recall, was an issue when Gmail was first released).

Not that I'm familiar with much beyond C and Perl at this point. Although with Web 2.0 or whatever, we're all sucked in to some extent.

Oh yeah, there are plenty issues with IE (especially IE 6 and earlier), and there is an issue with standard support (I guess IE is its own standard), but Firefox would've helped developers a lot if they added some of the functionality (implemented in IE) I discussed in the previous post.
But the thing is - since 80% of the users have IE, web developers (or rather designers) are pretty much forced to develop for IE and then play around with styles to satisfy Gecko browsers. And IE does have some nice features. It's not as bad as many try to paint it to be.

IMO its the features that IE doesn't (or didn't have) that made it worse than Firefox, and the fact that IT is expandible and you can add alot of content that your average user is happy about (not nessecarilly you pissy web developers ;) jk)

Saph: you can change the interface of firefox, download themes, they will chang the look and feel of firefox.

******** ******** ********

Went to bed last night and left my comp on d/loading. Woke up to a blue screen error, bleary-eyed I reset my machine and when it restarted there was no start bar on my desktop. I also have no access to my start menu either!

I can't copy or move any files from drive to drive nor can I copy or paste any text! and... I can't get my start menu back!!

I've tried restarting my comp in 'safe mode' I've tried to reboot the machine from 'last settings that worked' from the f8 advanced menu...doesn't help..

I've also done:

Ctrl+Alt+Del \File\New Task (run) \ rstrui.exe\ Enter - Didn't work

And:

%SystemRoot%\system32\restore\rstrui.exe - Didn't work

I'm stuck and don't know what to do. Anyone have any ideas or do I have to format this piece of shit?

Also, when I reboot I get:

Windows Defender

Application failed to initalize: 0x800 106ba. A problem caused the program's service to stop. To start the service, restart your computer or search Help and Support for how to start a service manually.

----

Restarting doesn't help... and I can't access Help and Support.

I also can't minimize any window i have open because without a start bar it disappears and goes into some abyss. Alt + tab doesn't work, but my programs remain open, apparently.

What is going on? :( and how do I fix it?

You could try a "Repair Installation" if you have your Windows CD.

Here's some info:

Or you could download and make one of these:

So I have a question. I have the first 4 hours of 24 on my IO digital cable DVR thingie. Is there any way for me to hook up my laptop in order to copy the episodes onto it and create a DVD? The only thing in the manual is recording it to a tape, but I'm sure there's another way.
