Ya. It doesn't even detect it. I am using a program called EasyRecovery which is for removing data from corrupted or formatted or any type of inconvienienced drives and it finds all the I/O errors on the disk and its findings are quite alarming. No non specifc program I have used can even detect the errors, but I'm wary because I've had a few major scares this past week with my drives and would like to fix it before it decides to kill my data, but don't know how to get at the I/O errors.

I've also used Partition magic which does not find the errors either.

For now I would just say to backup everything that you need. Though it can be good to be preemptive about disk failures, they do happen and can be tough to prevent.

Looks like EasyRecovery is a McAfee program. Are there no options within the program for trying to fix the errors?

Do viruses, spyware, and other malitious malware get into plug-and-play USB hard drives? I keep my music and pictures on a Seagate and am wondering if I got something bad to the computer would it spread to my backuped documents on the external as well?

Potentially, yes. If you have a spyware scanner, use it to scan the external HD as well.

Ontrack Easy Recvoery Proffessional.

No idea if that's a branch of McAfee or not. The prgram is for retrieval, it has no options for deep root repair, just a bunch of diagnostics.

Interesting, looks like its a different company actually.

Yeah, honestly I'd just backup everything (which of course you should be doing anyways :p) and hope for the best for now. There probably are programs out there that can do some amount of repair (Scandisk is fairly rudimentary really), though I'm not familiar with them.

You should have a couple external drives... 300gigs is a huge amount of porn that you can't just take with you and watch at other people's house/laptop.

:D

Ok, I'm asking this cuz I'm sick and tired of fixing everyone's computers. Essentially, I know a lot of people who don't know JACK about computers, so when something goes wrong, they call me. Now I generally reformat my hard drive every year or so, just to clean up all the crap that ends up out there.

Well I've done this for some other people as well, and now they're in the habit of calling me to redo it for them. Is there any program out there that will just automatically go thru and clean up all the shit that they accumulate that the spyware/adware/etc stuff doesn't clean up? I just hate spending half a day doing it, even if i do get something extra out of the deal. I'd rather them do it on their own and call me only if neccessary.

Just a question: I am getting a USB hard drive from ebay, which I just realized is USB 1.0 or something like that. From what I gather, this is has a much slower data transfer rate than USB 2.0 devices.
I'm wondering if I store my music files on this hard drive, would the data transfer rate be sufficient to allow me to play these files on my iTunes?

2 q's

1. What is the best codec pack for me to get? I've just had to format this trash machine again , figured it the best time to get up to date with a modern codec pack.

2. What is a good DVD RW on the market? My one is dead.

Alright, I have a laptop with a mobile version of an Nvidia card. I have never been able to update the drivers on said video card because it seems like Nvidia doesn't support them. Does anyone know of a way around this so I can get the latest drivers?

Mine is not exactlly the same, but I had problems updating my drivers (I think I got a virus one time when I downloaded a background and it corrupted the card). I have an ATI mobile however. I was only able to update using 3rd party drivers.

Of course.. this doens't help you at all, does it?

This looks like a good place to start.
