download.com has safe downloads. And once you have WinRAR, double click on the file you downloaded and it will show the contents of it, extract them to your desktop or another folder, and then you will be good to go.
Wow, that actually seems to have worked. OK, you're no longer my most despised enemy Hanna. That title now belongs to DS. Good job.

So are these bit torrent programs gonna be like Napster and start getting people sued by the big companies? I see on that mininova website that you can download movies and I'm wondering if that's the same as trouble as downloading music.
Zinni might be off to jail for his Futurama... :p :D

It's tougher for them to get caught, partially because they're on overseas servers, but mainly because they don't provide the actual files, just the torrent files which act as middlemen. That technicality helps the websites. Others have been shut down, but mostly within the US.

Users won't get caught too much using this because the devil (ie RIAA) can't just go onto a program and look at who has 100 gb of shared music, like they could with Napster.

Downloading music is fine. The users that are at risk are the ones who are sharing an insane amount of files. Movies are different. I got caught downloading 4 times by Baytsp. That's a company that's hired by the mpaa/riaa to enforce copyrights. Tools like peerguardian that block ip's do not work. At all. btw, the fourth time I got caught, my isp got major pissed off and decided to cut off my acess. I asked the security team guy to allow me to talk to a super. Let me tell you, I kissed alot of ass but I got off the hook. Now, I download off irc sometimes usenet. It took a while to get used to download off of irc. It's not as easy as peer sharing. But, it's secure and fast as hell. This month alone I've downloaded close to 350 gigs in dvd's, music, ze pr0n, apps, etc. /me pats server

I'm above the law.
Alright, I'm getting sustained uploads at 60 kbs/Sec, which has been my normal time so far on these bittorrents. My downloads are never going above 5 kbs/Sec though, and alot of the time I'm not downloading at all. I've had a movie downloading since I finished the last one, which is over a day ago, and this still hasn't changed. Is there anything that I can do or that I'm doing wrong? It's just really strange that my uploading is going so fast but my downloading is crawling along.

I've noticed that other posters use browsers other than MS Internet Explorer. I have no problem believing that these other browsers are better. Is there someone that can give me the lowdown on these other browsers, and help me step out of the darkness into the light?

Reasons to switch, endless. Reasons to stay with IE... none, except you can go directly to your hardrive via IE is the only thing you can't do in Firefox (as far as I know).
Sure the 'new' ie is attempting to catch up (3 years behind) but its buggy and etc. Plus its Microsoft.
Anyways, with Firefox, you have
1) tabbed browsing
2) embedded customizable search engine(S)
3) loads of extensions to customize your browsing experience, from special bookmark options, to javascript blockers. many many many different things you can do with it that you can't with IE.

This younger generation. What do people use? As you can guess, I use IE. I assume it's the same with Jayro.

Firefox is, like, totally rad, yo. ;)
Tabbed browsing is nice cause you can sort of have multiple browsers open in one window. It's nice for going back and forth, and saves you room on your taskbar.
There is a built-in pop-up blocker in Firefox that is about 98% effective, so that's really nice to have. There are other "extensions" you can download, sort of like add-ons that do stuff like track sports scores or stock tickers, or allow you do do more advanced crap that at this point you probably won't care about.
Built-in search engines are nice, saving you a few seconds I guess. Basically right next to the address bar, there is another space where you can type whatever you want and do a search in Google, Yahoo, Wikipedia, etc. Saves you a couple of mouse clicks I guess.
I recommend it to most people, its worth a shot at least to try out.

I believe that Firefox and Netscape both have the same base, a browser called Mozilla. I'm not sure if Netscape has all the same features though. The main reason people like Firefox though is that its open-source, meaning bugs tend to be fixed more quickly because more people (anyone really) work in it at the same time. Netscape is certainly a good one though, there are several people I work with who prefer it.

They still make netscape?
Search engine is underrated by Ach, because you can have any number of sites that you frequent and be able to search them (if they have 'searches', such as Wiki, or Amazon, or ebay, etc.) by chosing it and simply typing what you want to seach.. instead of having to go to the website and find the search bar, etc.
In truth, I don't know what Netscape is like because I haven't used it in about 4 years. But I thought it got bought out by AOL or started using Opera software or something a while back. If its AOL Netscape then a big YES to Firefox being better IMO.
With the tabbed browsing, all you have to do (unless I set this in preferences or something) is middle click (if your mouse has a roller) on a link and it will open in a new tab (of which has its own taskbar, as you'll see) and you won't lose your current page or have to switch windows to look at different things. Useful for drafts, etc.
edit: just ignore everything I said about Netscape. :D

I'm now using Firefox in a separate window. If I like it, I'll use it for my high-powered BigSoccer, vervetastic activity.
