This guy has horrible luck. After Japorea he derserves to have a good World Cup next summer as much as anyone...hopefully he can recover his fitness in time...

I hope this is not a sign of things to come for Argentina. Heading in to Japorea just about every starter had some sort of injury during the previous season (I have to think things may have turned out a bit differently with Ayala, a healthy Crespo and a healthy Veron in the squad). With Heinze and Mascherano already missing the NT can not afford much more of this type of news. Given their history, I have to think that Aimar and Crespo will suffer an unfortunate injury over the next few months. It would be nice if Crespo could finally head to a World Cup with a clean bill of health for once (injured shortly before France as well wasn't he?).

Why can't this kind of crap happen to Brazil, England and/or the Netherlands?

Bad news, indeed. However I think we should wait for the medical report to see how bad it really is.

Also, though I think Ayala is one of the best in this position, he has shown some weakening lately, and it may be a good occasion to try other good defenders like Milito.

I'll be more tensed with people getting injured in March or April...

Bad news yes, but we have the opportunity to use people like Milito or Rodriguez.... lets not panic yet.

Well, still not that bad... It will give us an opportunity to try other defenders for the Croatia friendly.

By the way, just read that it would take place in Basel. Looks like they like to play in Switzerland. Two matches in a few months; what a joy!..

That is a smart friendly to play. It will be played close to Germany and against a team similar to Serbia.

Now if we could only get a couple more friendlies, one against an African team and one against a northern European team. Say Ghana and Denmark, something like that.

We have to look at the bright side. Maybe there is a silver lining if injured players like Ayala, Heinze and Mascherano take some time off and come back fresh for the WC, as long as they come back with enough time to get some playing and they can get back in rhythm.

I think it would be informatie and interesting if we could start a thread with all our possible national team playrs who have an injury, what the expected recovery time is and any news we may hear. Ayala is only projected to be out 3 months max.

the operation on ayala's knee was successful according to his club's doc. he is expected to return mid-march. personally, i think it's no bad thing. as someone else mentioned, better to be injured now than closer to the world cup, and it also means he'll be rested. we mustn't forget, with all this talk of gonzalo and milito etc, ayala is still the main man.

I dunno, I like Ayala don't get me wrong, but he is not as big a loss as Heinze or Mascherano.... speaking of wich any news on these kids????

Agreed...Mascherano in particular. There was an article on Ole yesterday regarding Mascherano's status...I think he is getting ready to begin light workouts. I believe Heinze is in much worse shape...not sure if he'll be back soon enough to get any time with Man U before the end of the season.

Argentina's bad luck with injuries over the past few World Cups is ridiculous.

Damn I feel for this kid, he really is a deserving member of the squad and sad thing is he really is not all that young. So if in form 4 years from now that cup in 2010 may be his only WC!!!! He deserves more.

Heinze definately earned this WC. I think he is one of our best defenders, in terms of consistency, tenacity, and stopping power.

Argentina doesn't really need Ayala, there are Samuel, Milito, Rodriguez, Burdisso. DeMichelis can play there too. If Heinze does not go, who would be behind Sorin on the left?

I hope Heinze comes back, but if he doesn't, I think Placente would be a good option to replace him. And I'd think Gonzalo should also be able to play on the left. Oh, and what happened to Clemente? I guess he is still in the Russian black hole, but he could be an option.

Placente??? Well, let's just hope Sorin can play every game or it'll be a quick hasta la vista.

It is weird how Placente 4 years ago showed so much promise... I mean the kid was very good... and now I would not even think of putting him on the squad.. sorry.

i was never impressed with placente, not even four years ago and not even when leverkuson were doing so well in europe.
