And why would it take that long to determine who can and can't get tickets?

If it's first come first sirve , shouldnt they already have most of the people that are receiving tickets ? ( unless they didnt receive enough ticket orders.. which I find very very unlikely )

How did you NOT know this?
Ticket Information for 2006 FIFA World Cup (http://www.ussoccer.com/schedule/content.sps?iType=4165&icustompageid=16109)
The pre-sale will end on Wednesday, January 4, 2006, at 5 p.m. CT. Any tickets still available after the private pre-sale will be made available to the general public on Friday, January 6, 2006, at 9 a.m. CT. All ticket orders are subject to U.S. Soccer and FIFA’s Terms and Conditions and members with order forms that cannot be filled (i.e. insufficient information, payment issues, etc.) will be notified before tickets are released to the public. Orders received after the U.S. Soccer allotment is sold will be placed on a waiting list with U.S. Soccer until all preceding orders are confirmed.
It's been on US Soccer's site since BEORE the pre-sale started.

There seems to be some guarded optimism around here for those who got their information into USSF on Tuesday, but the official announcement is supposed to come around that January date.
I'm for one am trying not to think about it, but here I am back in US Fans again...

Yes, I KNEW when the pre-sale ended, but if the requests for all the tickets have been filled up already, then why should it take 17 more days to determine who gets tickets or not?
The pre-sale should officially end Jan. 4th - meaning people should still be able to be put on a waiting list until then - but if all the tickets are requested before then, then there is NO point in waiting until the 4th to let people know if they got tickets or not. Make sense?

Do you think they've already sold over 21,000 tickets? I don't.

I thought I read somewhere that we might begin to hear this week about whether we got the tickets or not. The way the USSoccer web site reads is that, since this is first come first serve, we will hear back as they fulfill the orders. The USSoccer site is quite disappointing in that it has NO information on the orders that happened and whether it was a lot or a little. (or at least nothing obvious to me.)
The flip side is that if the snafu with the faxes and the overwhelming response in the first day causes them to have to make some decisions on how to handle the response, then that may cause a delay that could very well extend beyond January 4th: if history is any guide to the decision-making and execution capabilities of the USSF!!

Maybe you have a different URL than I do, because I'm not seeing what you're seeing. Please provide a link to a page on US Soccer's site where it says that "since this is first come first serve, we will hear back as they fulfill the orders." Also point out where it says that they were planning to tell everyone how many orders they received.
Thanks in advance!

How do you know that their decision making process was in some way altered by the number of applications they received?

Ok...I was not being literal. I said, it "reads", not it 'says'...a difference, which means that I am making some assumptions in what it means versus it being clear that this is what it is saying. Here's the quote from the answer to question 11 on the FAQ pages at http://www.ussoccer.com/schedule/content.sps?iType=4165&icustompageid=16215 that I 'read' as saying we should hear back before the 4th:
"Ticket orders for the exclusive ussoccerfan.com pre-sale will be processed on a first-come-first-serve basis. Orders received after the U.S. Soccer allotment of tickets is sold will still be confirmed as received; however, the orders will not be processed. These orders will be placed on a waiting list with U.S. Soccer until all preceding orders are confirmed. "
The phrase 'processed on a first-come-first-serve basis' is what I am referring to here. If they are processed (not just confirmed) as they come in (my assumption) then you would expect to hear before the end of the period. There is no reason to wait...there is no 'how do I balance who gets what tickets' to deliberate on. (Valid) Order 1 gets all the tickets they asked for. Order 2 all the tickets they asked for minus whatever is sold out...and so on. So why wait until the end date? That is how I 'read' it. Now, they could always process the orders (which to me means determine what tickets you get, but again, that is an assumption, as process could mean just about anything) and then not notify anyone.
I never said that USSF said they 'planned' on telling us how many orders they received. I said I was disappointed that they didn't tell us. Note the difference between USSF and FIFA. FIFA gave updates after the first day as to how many requests they received against the number of tickets available and then update that on a regular basis. On USSOCCER.com I didn't even see any explanation or apology for the fax screw up or any update on the ticket process whatsoever. That's disappointing.
As far as their decision-making is concerned, that was just a slam on USSF. Notice that I said 'if' at the beginning of my statement. I think they SHOULD alter their 'first-come-first served' policy. They screwed up in that their fax process was broken during a critical period of the initial order window. This altered, fundamentally, the basic process. Many of us had to make a decision as to whether to keep hoping the fax would go through, or ensure our order arrived by getting it to an overnight carrier before they closed for the night. As a result they should consider all applications arriving by a certain time (certainly no earlier than the 10am delivery of overnights) as having arrived at the same time. This may be a totally irrelevant issue as they may have enough tickets for EVERYONE that signed up...we just don't know. However, from what I have seen of their decision making ability to date, I don't hold out any high hopes about being impressed with whatever they do wind up doing. That's the basic point. My hope is that this is an irrelevant issue and that we all get the tickets we asked for.
You're welcome after the fact. Though I am not sure that thinking the way I do help will help anyone!

It seems to me that if they want to inform everyone who participated in the pre-sale of the results of their application they will have to charge the credit cards and get approvals before January 4. The reason for this is some of the credit cards may not work or some of the applicants may change their minds. To the extent any of this happens, it will affect the answer they give to those at the tail end of their application list. It would seem a logical inference that this means some sort of action will be taken ahead of January 4 that we can check (perhaps by checking charges on credit cards) to see what is happening. I wouldn't be surprised if those at the start of the application list see something this coming week.

Yeah, my assumption is they will notify folks as orders are processed - I don't see how waiting until the 4th of January to tell everyone at the same time serves any useful purpose.
I would also assume they are maintaining a running tally of sorts and once the orders taper off (e.g., the obvious die-hards probably got their orders in by Wednesday) they will start "processing" in earnest - assigning tickets, charging credit cards, etc.
I would be suprised if people didn't start hearing something by the week after Christmas.
Just a guess.
